Odd Body Parts Puzzle
68Learning By Association
In 21st Century society, learning takes many forms. A basic method of learning is recall; and often, this recall is done through association. How did children of yesteryear learn the alphabet? They sang the letter name. Even today, children sing :
Ay, Be, Cee, Dee, Ee ,Efe, Gee.
This method does not provide the phonetic sound of letters, which is good to know. But, many words are not phonetic. They have to be remembered as sight words. English language has rules and countless exceptions to the rules! A simple example is July and truly. Of course there are others too numerous to mention such as rough, tough, enough and dough [which some call 'duff' as in 'guava dough' !Even though it is really guava dough, most individuals break the rule and call it duff. They even spell it that way!
Counting was done by association too.
One two, buckle my shoe.
Three, four, shut the door.
Five six, pick up stick...
Some people criticize the learning methods of the past as promoting rote and not stimulated thinkers. Today, the stimulated thinkers are those who design electronic games and other pleasure activities for the masses who sit before a television, an X Box, PlayStation or computer. No longer is Alzheimer limited to Grandma and Grandpa. Some young children forget instructions or what was said within two minutes of hearing it; and they want someone to repeat the information!
