Ode To MS Word - A Thanksgiving

I had always wanted to be a writer! But, then, I was always at a loss for the EXACT word! By the time I frantically scrabbled through my Dictionary and Thesaurus my creative ideas or juices or whatever had vanished or dried up! Well , for many, many years I just gave it all up as a hopeless endeavour. Then comes along my Saviour -Bill Gates! He showered blessing of word processor, MS Word! And Lo ! Behold! I was saved! I found my best friend! Now I have a wee bit of courage to cope with certain tsunamis in the sea of writing!

Anyway,at this instant,I have a suspicion that all the bards must be turning in their graves when my ode is published but then, I do have to make this unpretentious offering to Word! Moreover, I fancy the bards will forgive me when they realise how sincerely my heart overfloweth with thankfulness! Well, here's my humble contribution!

An ODE to Microsoft Word!

How can I go through the world of writing without you!

You are there helping me with words when I fumble

You rap me with a red line when I err

And the dreaded green fragment line -

Makes me put on my thinking cap.

You do the word count for me in the blink of an eye

You spice up my words with word art

You dress up my writings with exotic fonts

In various sizes and colors

And insert tables, columns, whatever in an instant!

Give me one instance what you cannot do.

You gently hold my hand

And lead me through the rough terrain of writing

Step by step or rather word by word, line by line and para by para!

Thanks Bill Gates, Thanks Microsoft

For giving me my best friend!

Well, there, that’s it! My first poem! Then, I came across a hub by Ajcor

and I have absolutely no idea to which category my poem belongs!

Anyway ,I suppose my poem belongs to the category ‘Straight from the heart’.

Good one this. Dont' worry, Laila Rajaratnam. The bards woudn't be turning in their graves after reading your ode. They must be regretting that in their time they didn't have MS Word, Otherwise how much easier would it have been to turn out more odes!

I completely agree. Believe me, a person like me, who used to hate computers untill recently, sits glued to a stupid laptop for hours together, only because everything is so user friendly. It's just like a mom helping her toddler to walk and ensuring that he doesn't fall. The programs help you thru in every task-u name it and they have it.

Hi, Laila-I'm not sure what category it would fit into, either.  Humorous/heartfelt?  :)

What I should actually say, if you are even a little serious about writing poetry is that your strength is in the flow and cadence of the way you use words...like a waterfall.  I'm not sure--maybe it is a cultural thing, but it is nice.  I would encourage you to try to choose a more serious subject and see where you go from there--choose something you really feel something about.

Sorry I was so late in coming over here, but I've been wrote/read out--tired!

Laila you write straight from the heart

that's what makes some poems a work of art

Don't worry about fitting into a category

as long as you have to tell a great story

Just Keep on writing with the same flow

and spreading everywhere joy and glow

Thanks for that nice tribute to Bill Gates

with your words which are as sweet as Dates

And like you may many people propel to the loft

with wonderful applications coming from Microsoft

Hi Laila - thank you for your link to my hub on poetry - I really liked your words in the first paragraph - "Now I have a wee bit of courage to cope with certain tsunamis in the sea of writing!" - but you also said the magic words in the above comment "but this one came out automatically" . I believe that this is a really good sign of things to come from you which I look forward to reading - I enjoyed your poem, it was an honouring as in ode to BG and I liked your use of words - keep going Laila....cheers

I must sincerely appreciate your poetry. I fully agree that Bill Gate's MS word is user friendly. It spell checks, grammar checks, count words and so on. At times it lends supporting hand to our creative ideas. It is a best friend in most respects. But all creativity flows from our mind only. We are able to recall or recognize our spelling or grammar skills. It is like your walking stick. We need it when we are disabled or weak. When we get confidence we may not need such supports. As time passes by we may have our creativity alive and flowing (it will not get dried up!!!) Dependence and reliability of spellchecker or grammar checker are under criticism. Evidences show that most of the occasions these user-friendly tools let us down. I have experienced it. I would like to record my appreciation for the nice poem.

Great Hub. Again, I see you and I think alike. I spend a lot of time, sometimes, just choosing which font to use. They all have such great names, too, don't they?

Your Ode is delightful and made me smile with recognition. I think we like many of the same things!
