Of Books and Men

I love to read and nothing makes me feel more secure in the idea that I can improve my writing than by reading. I prefer the classics, Hemingway and Carroll are particular favorites of mine. Recently though I've been busy reading of mice and men, which I admit right now I've not read before.

So don't tell me the ending... maybe then my writing will see an improvement.

I think the biggest thing that books allow people to do is to transport them from reality, at least for a while. Now, the journey might be to improve their mind, to find something new or to simply enjoy the time in peace and quite.

I believe people need books, and books need us. Writers are important, not in the subjects of religion or of politics, it's a minefield of bitterness and anger there, but in the arts, the how to do something, how to better oneself.

This is one of the main reason that men and books are linked and have been linked for a long time.  We can write some wonderful things.

Books are a simple way of networking and, book clubs are a part of networking, it is easy to say "have you read this book?" to a person than it is to talk about certain subjects. In my family the subject of money and how to make it is a taboo subject.

Yet...

Read a book about money or how to make money or how to improve your finances and recommend it to friends and family this is not bad. You can sit and talk about how the author made money or how the wrote the book, and there can be a decent discussion.

In an around about way we can discuss the taboo subject by discussing the ideas the author is giving. Many will learn from it, and they also learn that there are many differing views on money, religion or finances or whatever the difficult subject is.

One rule: No Personal Attacks.

Of books, and men... funny thing this book idea is.

The best thing about books is you learn to expand your mind, for me there is always the question of interest, yes I do enjoy the classics, but i also read fiction, some fantasy and historical biographies. Also finance and politics and history.

You are probably asking why so much? Why read so much, you're a writer,a nd writers write and that is how they create money for themselves.

I believe that reading books improves the writing of an author and increases the ability to network and to market their books. Yes, Publishing a book is simple, but what if it's be done before?

This can create a problem. By reading a book and improving your writing you can connect with your fellow man. You Can Connect with them on subjects you never believed you could. Of course if you have a strong view on something, books should allow you to understand that others might take an different view.  It will either way expand your horizons.

Of Books and Men, a rather unique combination.

I love the title to this hub it drew me straight in - you make a lot of sense, and I was pleasantly surprised to see one of my hubs listed too - thanks for including my hub and for the informative read. The book you are currently reading is excellent and right at the end....*grin*.....

I mus agree with you on many points - reading has improved my writing vastly, but I also find some very interesting and often opposing views in books - and these make me think and often re-formulate my own views...

Yep reading and writing are connected for sure. When I get stuck in my writing, I take a break and do some reading, and then I'm inspired and full of ideas to write again!

As a friend of Rebecca's and a writer I feel this hub deserves a reply by hub as my reply would be too long.

I will say for now regarding your hub.

Very astute Hub that could only be written with a background in the industry.

Well done, an enjoyable and uplifting help to my current project.

I will repley in my next hub.

Regards Colin

Some sage wisdom on writing. It's true. Writers do write. Just like painters paint. Aaah, tis a joy to be so creative! I enjoyed this.

"Of Mice and Men"........... great choice; it's fabulous.

The last time I can remember doing that was when my son read "The Old Man and the Sea," in high school. He was like, "C'mon, you haven't read this? It wasn't too bad."

Needless to say, if he even sounds like he likes a novel............ I have to take it seriously. The ones he actually enjoys are few and far between, but I think that's changing as he gets older and can simply read for enjoyment.

Have fun!

Hi Rebecca E,

Personally I try to spend as much time reading as I do writing as it keeps my ideas flowing. Nice hub, Holly

Writers read and readers write, reading and writing are two sides of the same coin. I read a lot and don't bother with TV, books have so much to offer. Human beings have always loved a good story, it's in our nature, and books will never go out of fashion.

Excellent hub! I love books, matter of fact I have troubles with readers since I like to actually have them in my hand.

this was enlightening to read, and i learned a bit from this. people definitely have different views and that sometimes makes it hard to write. also i agree with you about the books expanding mental horizons and how one writes. a lot of the books i have read have greatly influenced my writing and my vocabulary.

as long as we understand and can learn from one another, books are of value.
