If you feel chronic back pain due to your average office chair, you should look for an office ball chair. The standard office chair can be very uncomfortable and painful for the spine. Ball chairs, on the other hand, have a lot of advantages which will give your health a boost and improve your overall wellness.

By using an office ball chair, you derive the benefit of keeping your spine alignment intact. An exercise ball is actually an excellent ergonomic posture chair. Your body has an easier time balancing itself when the spine is aligned correctly. Therefore, your body will independently align itself to the optimum posture. If you're looking to take some of the stress off of your back, and decrease the pain, this will help a lot.

A ball chair works many of your muscle groups because the ball itself is not stable and your body needs to tense the right muscles to maintain balance. By doing this, all these muscles get a workout. The reflexes of your muscles as well as your balance will be greatly improved by sitting on an uneven surface all day. One extra benefit is that the body mostly employs the abdominal muscles to respond to shifts in balance. Hence, you are actually exercising your abs while you sit!

The ball chair has a unique round design which causes you to change positions often so that you can remain balanced. Your body will be in a new position, for example, if you simply rotate to face the phone. The damage caused by prolonged sitting in the same position can thereby be reduced. Another consideration is that the circulation to some parts of the body after prolonged sitting is reduced when using a standard desk chair. By using an office ball chair, however, you will keep the blood flowing efficiently throughout your body all day.

Exercise balls that are specifically designed for sitting can range from $15 to $200 in price. Some of the best ergonomic chairs can cost $400 and up, much more than a ball chair.

There are a few basic factors you need to look into when buying your ball chair. The chair size should keep your feet touching the floor when you sit, and your arms resting on the desk comfortably. It's important that your legs form a 90 degree angle at the knees when using the chair. The chair isn't right for you if this isn't the case. Also consider how much you weigh before purchasing an office ball chair. You need to choose the size carefully; if your weight causes the chair to compress or flatten, you need a bigger ball. The chair can be under-inflated if one happens to be very light in weight.

Before purchasing a ball chair, which can be a fine alternative to a common office chair, you should consult a doctor. Your doctor's opinion is particularly important if you've had any back problems or surgeries.

Oh that is sooooo cool! I often thought about using my yoga ball as a chair but never had the guts to do it. I'm so glad someone invented an office 'chair'.

Great hub!

Thanks, Sophia! The advantages of buying an actual chair instead of using an exercise ball is that it's more stable and you get some back support. But it could be a good idea to experiment with a plain ball to help you get used to the whole thing. Just be patient, it will feel very strange for a while!
