"Oh My Stars and Garters!"
79"I Don't Have Anything To Wear!"
It has always been of great concern
No matter the time or the place
What shall I wear the female cries
I must be the best dressed there!
But no matter the woman, no matter the place
Always someone will get in your face.
Even if you dare to choose the clothes
that actually fit the time and place;
It will not be right, its always wrong
Wear Capri's on the river?
Who would dare to wear pants
While shooting a pistol?
Look! That first lady how wrong
She has on flip flops while up in the air!
Oh Just get over it!
What meanness you share
The first lady wore shorts outside!
What else would she wear?
The Grand Canyon in the summertime?
Are you out of your mind?
You try wearing a ballgown
And hike the south rim at the same time!
Clothing of First Ladies
As everyone is well aware, Michelle Obama had the audacity to wear shorts when she went hiking with her daughter in the Grand Canyon this week! Yes, it is true, August 19, 2009 headlines scream the horrifying news! Our first lady in sight of all the cameras and tourists and so and so's wore shorts!
Please, give me a break. Poor Bess Truman, she didn't know what she was doing when she opened the White House to the public did she? Not that that would stop the media frenzy of course but still, it makes a good point of reference.
I was interested in one of the journalist's comment of "five dollars says there's a picture of Eleanor Roosevelt in shorts" No shorts but some very interesting pictures nonetheless! There she is shooting a pistol! Another at the egg roll on the White House lawn and she has her riding outfit complete with riding crop! I wonder if any newspaper person dared to say she had it to keep the kiddies in line?
Oh, sorry, how rude of me to think so! Look at the one of Eleanor Roosevelt with a bare armed dress on. Would anyone have dared comment on that? OF course not. But then, she wouldn't have cared either would she?
|"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."
That's always been a favorite quote of mine simply because it is difficult to live up to its meaning. Everyone gets hammered by public opinion at one time or another. The only difference is that the celebrities, politicians, famous and infamous of the world take the hits more often.
The other first lady chosen for this comparison study was Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. I realize someone will remark that many photos of her with her family were not made public until recently however, that does not change the fact that someone took the photos in the first place. Cold war notwithstanding, would we have seen them if times had been different? I say we definitely would have and perhaps the media would not have been so gentle with her either. Look! Her toes are showing!
Silly isn't it?
Of course, the obvious has already been said but the big "who is they" question remains. The report speaks of polls that favor Michelle Obama wearing her shorts but the reporters continue to imply criticism.
OH! I GET IT! Imply is the key word here! Sorry, just a bit slow; it is the weekend after all :)
Everyone else voted why not you?
Was the first lady inappropriately dressed while visiting the Grand Canyon during the week of 081909?

Thank you Ralph :) it was fun!
"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." One of my favourite quotes too and so freeing and empowering when this truth is allowed to sink in. I voted no but that is an opinion that I have come to without the benefit of seeing the photos of what she is wearing but based on what I wore when I was at the Grand Canyon you’ve guessed it was shorts.
oops you are right Maggs!! I left her pic out! yes, shorts...let me go edit that... :)
People in the public eye will always be held up to a greater degree of scrutiny with regard to how they are dressed. Glad it is not me!
me too Peggy :)

Great hub! Nothing like a little humor, sadly lacking these days, to put things in perspective. Nice poem!
