Old wives tales about pregnancy and determining the gender of babies have been around for a long time. How long? Well, probably as long as women have been having children!

Could any of them really give you any insight into your unborn baby's gender? I would say yes, perhaps some of these old wives tale are based on fact. Should you believe what they tell you about your baby's gender? Well I wouldn't bet the farm on their accuracy, nor believe them as absolute baby gender predictors, I would just relax and have some fun with them.

Here are five of the most popular old wives tales, and how to preform them:

1.This old wives tale for determining the sex of your baby is easy to do, and is very popular. It consists of having the mother-to-be lie on her back while suspending her wedding ring (or any small metallic object) over her belly. Tie it on a thread or better yet a strand of the mothers hair. If the ring starts to move back and forth in a straight line it's a boy, if it moves in a circular motion its a girl.

2. I must admit this old wives tale scares me a little, Drano is a very caustic and can cause burns, or worse, so if you decide to give this old wives tale a go you're on your own and cannot hold me responsible in any way! If you want to give it a try anyway, here's how you do the Drano test to determine the gender of your baby. Save some of your first urine in the morning, and carefully (you could produce dangerous fumes, or other chemical reactions) pour your urine into a glass jar (use glass as things could get hot!) with a small amount of Drano in it (I would suggest doing this outside and not in an enclosed space!) If the Drano-urine mixture changes to a brownish color you may be carrying a boy, if it stays clear a girl baby may be in your future.

3. If you're carrying your baby high in the womb you should have a girl, if your carrying your baby lower, well it just might be a boy! There seems to be some evidence that this particular old wives tale has some basis in fact and could help you in determining the sex of your unborn baby.

4.If your unborn baby's heart rate is140 beats per minute or above you might just be having a girl baby, but if the baby's heart rate is less than 140 beats per minute you should be carrying a boy. This old wives tale may also may have a basis in fact as females usually have a higher heart rate then males.

5. Find your sweet tooth acting up? Congratulations, you may be having a baby girl. If you crave salt and/or sour foods than you may be having a baby boy! I'm not sure what the old pickles and ice cream craving would tell you-maybe twins?

• Shape Of Mother-To-Be's Face- If the mother-to-be's face is fuller and rounder while pregnant, you'll have a baby girl. If the mom's face is longer and thinner you're carrying a baby boy.
• The Key Test- If the mother to be picks up a key by the larger round end she'll be having a baby boy. If she happens to pick a key up by the smaller end, well it's a girl baby. Grab the key in the middle, could be twins;o).
• Mayan Old Wives Tale- Add the mothers age at conception to the year of conception if the sum is an odd number you'll have a male baby, if the sum is even a female baby is on the way.
• Acne During Pregnancy- If you suffer with acne breakouts during your pregnancy it said you'll have a girl, caused by the extra hormones. If of course you're skin remains clear it's a boy!
• Smelling Of Garlic- If the mother eats a clove of garlic and you can smell the garlic coming from her pores-it's a boy baby, if there is no smell of garlic-it'll be a baby girl.
• Pink Bows, Scissors, And A Wooden Spoon- Put these items under your pillow and you'll have a baby girl.
• Poll Children- Take a poll of several children under the age of five, their accuracy can be uncanny!
• Sex During Conception- If the mother-to-be is the most aggressive while having sex to conceive she'll have a baby boy, if the father is the aggressive one a baby girl will result.
• Your Legs- If you gain weight in your legs you'll have a boy, if your legs remain shapely you'll have a girl baby.
• Moodiness- If you find yourself very moody during the pregnancy you'll have a baby girl, if not it's a boy.
• Bread- If you want the heel of a loaf of bread you'll have a boy, eat from the center of the loaf it'll be a girl.
• Mother's Beauty- If you feel very beautiful during your pregnancy you'll have a boy, if you feel your beauty fades you'll have a girl.
• Dreams- If you dream you'll have a baby girl-it's a boy, if you dream you'll have a baby boy-it's a girl!
• Graceful Or Clumsy?- If you feel very graceful during the pregnancy you can expect a baby girl, if you find your very clumsy you can expect a baby boy.
• Toddler Interest- If a toddler boy shows a lot of interest in the expectant mother it'll be a girl, if he shows a lack of interest it'll be a boy.
• Side You Prefer While Sleeping- Like to sleep on your left side during your pregnancy-you're carrying a baby boy, if it's the right side you prefer you'll have a girl.
• Hands- If a pregnant woman is asked to show her hands, and shows them palms down it's a boy, if she shows them palms up it'll be a girl.
• Father Gains Weight- If the baby's father gains weight during the pregnancy it's a girl baby, if he doesn't gain any weight you'll be having a baby boy.
• Beast Size- If the mother-to-be's left breast is larger than her right then your carrying a baby girl, if the right breast is larger then it's a baby boy.
• Morning Sickness- If you suffer from morning sickness a lot you'll have a girl, if the pregnancy goes smoothly with no nausea you'll have a boy.
• Cold Feet- Are your feet always cold during your pregnancy- you should have a baby boy. Feet feel the same as always- you should be carrying a baby girl.
• Leg Hair- If your leg hair is really growing fast you'll be having a baby boy, not so much-it'll be a girl baby.
• Sweaty Hands- If your hands are sweaty you'll have a girl, dry hands means a boy.
• Color Of Urine- If your urine is bright yellow you'll have a boy, dull yellow it'll be a girl.
• Chinese Gender Predictor- While not an old wives tale per se, the Chinese baby calendar can be a lot of fun and is considered very accurate in much of the eastern world.

While I wouldn't put much faith in these or any of the old wives tales out there, they can be a whole lot of fun, so just relax and enjoy experimenting with them.
