Oldie and Moldie Songs I Will Always Love

The Beatles with Ed Sullivan
The Beatles with Ed Sullivan

I think I may be finally old enough to do a piece like this. I knew this when I realized I could remember when The Beatles where on Ed Sullivan. Granted, I was very young and it's one of the few clear memories I have from that long ago, but there I was, planted in front of my grandparents' TV. And that for me - like everyone else on Earth - was a defining moment.

BRANDY - Looking Glass

I don't know anyone who's heard this song who doesn't like it. It's been in numerous TV shows and movies, and will probably be loved for as long as Man survives.

SMOOTH - Santana & Rob Thomas

I was a fan of Matchbox 20 before their vocalist was recruited to do this song. So before I ever heard it, I knew it would be good. Smooth became a ginormous hit worldwide and it's hard to hear without - at the very least - tapping your foot. Any time entertainment or news shows talk about Santana's comeback, Smooth is always the music they use to accompany the report.

And the percussion work is phenominal.

DECEMBER 1963 (OH, WHAT A NIGHT) - Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons

Say what you want about Frankie Valli, but that dude always had excellent musicians working with him (smart man!), and this song highlights that, as well as top-notch production, arrangement and writing. Originally, this song was sung by the drummer, the bassist and Frankie Valli.

MISERY - Green Day

Purist Green Day fans (and DJs, but what the hell do they know?) dislike this song and the album it came from - "Warning:" Their problem is that the musicians had the audacity to stretch their musical legs, play outside of their usual punk-rock box and experiment.

The result was one of the band's most mature and creative albums.

I like every song on it, and this one - with its gypsy-esque melody and dark lyrics - is my favorite.

MAXWELL'S SILVER HAMMER - The Beatles

This song was my introduction to how well rock-n-roll could accomodate dark subject matter. While the music itself is happy and bouncy, the lyrics are quite the opposite. Which leads us to the next song...

POSSUM KINGDOM - The Toadies

This song is just blatantly dark and twisted. No bouncy music, no cutesy vocals. Musicians will appreciate the interesting timing which endures throughout the song. The video is about a serial killer, but to me, this song is, and always will be, about a vampire.

WHITE RABBIT - White Rabbit

The dramatic, haunting quality of this song is undeniable, and despite it being an old-school "moldie," is still fun to play. When Grace Slick and the guys wrote and performed this song, I doubt they could have ever imagined they were providing the soundtrack to the 60's for future generations.

96 TEARS - ? Mark and the Mysterians

Clever, eh? "? Mark," When I was a kid, our (my siblings and I) sitter claimed her boyfriend was Mark. I never learned whether or not that was really true, but it's a good story for a good song.

KASHMIR - Led Zeppelin

This is my favorite Led Zep song. Hardcore fans might poo-poo this song as too far removed from the band's original blues roots but... I love it!

Hard-core fans tend to frown on musical growth.

So, to hell with them!

(EVERYBODY) BACKSTREET'S BACK - Backstreet Boys

I'm sure I'll get a lot of flack for including this one, and I can take it. I like everything about this song: The classic horror-themed video, the music, the vocals, and even the dance sequence. The guys are clearly talented and appeared to be having fun making this video..

I'm not a Backstreet Boys fan, but this song will always be on my favorites list.

CROSS EYED MARY - Jethro Tull

This was difficult, because while I like everything Tull has ever done, there are three I especially love: Aqualung, Bungle in the Jungle and Cross eyed Mary. I finally chose the latter.

HEADSTRONG - Trapt

I'm not sure this song is old enough to qualify as an "oldie," but I'm willing to risk it (not sure Trapt would be too thrilled about it). The only way to describe this song is kick ass and ballsy... oh, and fun to listen to!

LOVER'S CONCERTO - The Toys

I grew up hearing this song. It's one of my mother's absolute favorites. I like it, too. I was going to include an original televised performance video, but they were funky. I think you'll like this one.

BRAND NEW KEY - Melanie

One of the few songs I like which can be described as "cute," but I can't help it. I like this song. It makes me smile.

(I'VE BEEN) SEARCHING SO LONG - Chicago

This song has one of my favorite lines in it (Good things in life take a long time), features the very talented Peter Cetera, and utilizes the classic formula of starting out very slow and soft and ending up loud and hard. Example: "Proud Mary."

And there's something classy about a good band with horns.

MAGIC MAN - Heart

Nothing else required.

NOTHING COMPARES 2 U - Sinead O'Connor

Could I have chosen a more controversial artist? Sure, but I didn't choose her or this song. They chose me. Watch this video and listen to that voice, and tell me it's not mesmerizing..

There's a reason it was a huge hit and she was given a Grammy for it. So what if she threw it back in their faces. I gotta respect that kind of passion and commitment.

SWEET LULLABY - Deep Forest

(for Adam B)

If someone were to force me, under threat of torture, to choose just one musical genre to listen to for the rest of my life, I would have to pick World Beat. But if said torturer were versed in that specific genre and knew the myriad choices within that genre, and said, "One band ... ass-hole."

That one band would be Deep Forest.

BILLIE JEAN - Michael Jackson

The once King of Pop turned himself into a mutated, androgynous, clown-looking freak. But, my God, during those "Thriller" years, he was incredible.

I once heard someone in a country/western bar say, "Whether you love Michael Jackson or you hate him, when he's dancing, you're watching."

DIRTY LAUNDRY - Don Henley

As much as I've always liked and respected The Eagles, I like and respect drummer/singer/songwriter Don Henley even more. Example: Desperado.

Dirty Laundry is best "Fook You!" to entertainment media and paparazzi I've ever heard.

WHITER SHADE OF PALE - HSAS

Procol Harem recorded the timeless "Whiter Shade of Pale" way back before fire, and I didn't think anyone would ever be able to top their version - or even match it. Then a group of well-known musicians, Sammy Hagar, Neal Schon, Kenny Aaronson, Michael Shrieve, got together for a very short time (less than a year), called themselves HSAS, recorded an album (Through the Fire), played a few shows in Southern California and proved me wrong regarding "Whiter Shade of Pale."

LOSING MY RELIGION - R.E.M.

The lyrics to Losing My Religion

GOOD OLD FASHIONED LOVER BOY - Queen

A vocalist introduced me to Queen when I was about 19-years old, and still perfecting my craft. It was the most original, and imaginative music I'd ever heard! It was rock, blended with... what was that, 20's? 30's? Earlier?

Whatever the era, that singer and I formed a band and were soon playing many Queen songs; "Tie Your Mother Down," "White Man," Killer Queen," "The Prophet's Song," etc.

We never played this particular song, but it's always been one of my favorites. I found this gem of a video of Queen performing the song live for a small audience. I hope you enjoy it.

CARMINA BURANA - Carl Orff (1895-1982)

The moldiest of the oldies - so far - this piece was "Totally Awesome!" a half century before Sean Penn's Jeff Spicoli made that a catch phrase. Carmina Burana was composed by Carl Orff between 1935 and 1936, and has since been used in movies, trailers, cartoons, rock concerts and, when last I was there, Medieval Times ... to mention but a few.

The video below is an incredible marriage of Orff's powerful trionfi with the movie "300." ... Clearly made for each other.

LIFE'S BEEN GOOD - Joe Walsh

When Joe Walsh released this song, it was after he'd left James Gang and way before he Joined The Eagles.. It was MY song. I was living it - at least in my head. It was my mantra. Not only is this a fun song to listen to, but musically it's superior, and a blast to play.

I found this excellent performance video. It's just Joe - sans Eagles, probably during one of The Eagles various "retirements." But it shows that the old guy can definitely still rock.

I ONLY WANT TO SAY - Ian Gillan

I was already a fan of Ian Gillan's (Deep Purple) phenomenal voice when my uncle played the Original Broadway Cast soundtrack of Jesus Christ Superstar for me (which he'd seen when it opened on Broadway!). I became an instant fan of the entire two-album set, and realized just how powerful a Broadway production could be.

Sorry Ted Neeley; you may have "the eyes," but Ian Gillan has the voice.

SLOOP JOHN B - The Beach Boys

Brian Wilson was the Mozart of his time. Yeah, dammit, I said it! He created the "California surfer sound" - and it's still fun to listen to. The album "Pet Sounds" (written completely by Brian Wilson) inspired The Beatles' legendary "Sgt. Peppers's Lonely Hearts Club Band."

I'm from California, and hearing a Beach Boys song makes me just as homesick as the smell and sound of the ocean does.

BIG FOOT - Yngwie Malmsteen and Alcatrazz

This is where I get to brag about one of the musicians I worked with!!

In the 80's when I was with a Northwest road circuit metal band called Nasty, I was band-mates with two phenominal musicians (two of many such musicians I had the privilege to work with); a guitarist named Michael, and a bassist named Darrin. As we were riding home from a show at a Eugene (OR) Holiday Inn in the back of one of Michael's dad's restored antique panel trucks, his mom said, "Hey Mike, we just heard this incredible guitarist that sounds just like you," and she popped in a cassette tape.

The tape was "No Parole from Rock N' Roll." The band was Alcatrazz. And the guitarist was Yngwie Malmsteen (pronounced Eeng-vay).

She was right. It sounded exactly like Michael. This is my favorite song from that tape. Hope you like it.

TINY DANCER - Elton John

As far as I'm concerned "Madman Across the Water" is the best album Elton John ever did. It was awesome way back in 1971 when he released it, and it still holds up today. Don't argue with me! Won't do you any good ... oh, I may agree with you at the time, just to shut you the-hell up, but then I'll talk about you behind your back - using fancy-sounding English words like 'daft' and 'git' ... and you wouldn't want that, would you?

Would you?!

Anyway - "Tiny Dancer" is my favorite song from that album and, check it out, I found this great clip from Almost Famous to feature it.

DEACON BLUES - Steely Dan

This was a band who had a few hits during the 70s; "Do It Again," "Reelin' In The Years" and Rikki Don't Lose That Number," but it wasn't until well into the 80s that I discovered an album called Aja. To me, it was the classiest, most tasteful, most mature music I'd ever heard, and I've loved it ever since.

The video below is a 2006 performance of "Deacon Blues." My favorite song from Aja.

IN A BIG COUNTRY - Big Country

I've never seen you look like this without a reason - Another promise fallen through, another season passes by you.

Those opening words alone grabbed my attention. This anthem-esque tune is one those songs I've always loved and wanted to play. It's got everything: a catchy, fun to sing chorus, foot-stomping power-drums, an intelligent arrangement, a great melody and lyrics, and those cool Irish-sounding guitar riffs!

Although this Scottish band has had many albums and singles since its late 70s and, as far as I know, are still active, they'll always be best known for this powerful, self-titled song.

Nothing Compares is one of the most awesome songs ever. For some reason her voice and tone remind me of Annie Lennox who is another fantasitc singer. Grace Slick (of course!) is incredible too.

Great job! :)

Hey Constant

Love this hub (oh don't worry, i dispensed with the sarcasm before entering) for most of the songs I only have heard of here. And I so dig your taste in music that I donwloaded those I don't know. So thanks for sharing.

Btw, Prince wrote Nothing Compares... (that's why the correct title should be Nothing Compares 2U) and had his version too. You might want to check it out. :D

I needed this article, my mom's favorite is Lover's Concerto as well and of course I love the song. I have heard it on Sirrius on occassion and I sing right along. I believe that I was born in the wrong time, as I love the oldies it was an amazing time and the world was so different, thanks for giving me a little touch of being a little girl again and dancing with my sisters and mom in the living room.:)

-Cris, no sarcasm? Are you ill? Glad you liked the list. I'm sure I'll think of more so I'll start a list. I knew Prince wrote the song, but I forgot how the title was written out. Thanks. I'll fix it.

-You're very welcome, AE. I don't know what it is - recording equipment at that time, or what - but there's definitely something magical about the way those very old songs sound.

When I was still working, I used to look forward to the occasional cold. Take a couple days off, lay around in my boxer-briefs, drink Ny-Quil, play videos games and watch TV. Throw in sick days (for those few who still get 'em) and it's an awesome little vacation.

CS! Love that you mentioned the Boys right at the top! :)

Consider yourself as having met the one person who hates the song, Brandy. Can't stand it! Right now, I'm listening to Smooth - I love that song! I already know that I love Maxwell's Silver Hammer! I think Brand New Key is cute and catchy, too.

Gonna go through the rest now.

Love this hub too, by the way!

I remember the Beatles on tv, also Elvis' first appearance.  Interesting, I was also at my grandparent's house when I saw them.  When Elvis appeared, I was clapping and screaming LOL, and I couldn't have been more than 9 yrs old.  My grandparents weren't impressed. :)

Michael Jackson,,,he was at the top of his game when he did Billie Jean, Thriller,,that's the Michael Jackson I remember and love.  No matter what anyone thinks about what happened as he aged, I will always admire his talent.  It's a shame the way his life turned out :(

Thanks for sharing.

>I was going to include one from Hank Williams Jr., but I just couldn't find any I wanted to hear... EVER!

>If the contents of this particular hub were not to your liking, perhaps you'll identify with another selection I recently put together.  It's called "The GOP: Death by Duh"

Raiderfan, didn't expect to see you back. I think you are confused. If you want to hear "music that kicks butt" find a radio site. I don't take requests.

Hey Jonno! Good comeback, thanks! And thanks for the compliment. Any oldie suggestions? They don't have to be REAL old - up to 80s is good. And when are you going to do another hub? You are definitely missed.

Rss feed comments on this hub

Sixty, I don't understand what you mean... "on top of each hub"  at the top of the hub?  "Just under the comments heading"  at the bottom of the hub?

I give up.  I'll leave the Rss feed up - I seem to be getting more views there - but I completely don't understand the mechanics of the whole thing.

Good Morning Constant you are looking wonderful today. This is a cool list, I have not heard of some of them but others I just love. Santana yes that song makes me want to get up and groove my groove."Nothing Compares", that song is awesome."Oh What A Night", love that one too,I do aerobics to that number. The 'Brand New Key', I remember my Mum had that record, when it used to come on I did ballet to it, I loved it.

That Backstreet video this is the first time I have seen it,I never realised what an awesome video that was.Thumbs up.As we say here Down Under, that was 'Bonza Constant'.

Nothing Compares 2 U. That brings back memories from high school--back before I knew there was anything controversial about her. I worked at a drive-in movie theatre in high school, and listening to her song today put me back on the steps to the projection booth, hanging out with friends and doing things we probably shouldn't have been doing!

This is a great hub. I only knew a couple of them, I enjoyed learning about the others!

Thank you, Blonde. And you are looking especially lovely today! ;-) Glad you liked the list. Yep, the Backstreet video is why I like the song - mainly.

Thanks Proud Mom. I was a while back, eh? "Doing things we probably shouldn't have been doing" are always the best memories!

You know, sometimes when you meet someone and ask them what type of music they listen to, a lot of the time they say, "I listen to everything." I am always like..."really, ya do, no, shut up and tell me what f'n music you like." You actually are one of the select few who can say, "I listen to everything." That is a wide variety of genres and music on your list. You were even brave enough to list the Backstreet Boys. I also want to let you know however, that being brave enough to list the Backstreet Boys doesn't make it right.

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker  says:

Thank you, Adam, and I've been asked exactly that same question many times, and I've given that same answe: "I like everything." It is, indeed, the truth. I even think Rascal Flatts are pretty good - for a country band. I'm considering adding Carl Orff's Carmina Borana. It's DEFINITELY a "Moldie", and I'll always love it. But, I want to find a shorter video version of the movement ... it's obscenely long. (there's a joke there!)

I knew including the Backstreet Boys would bring some flack, but I had to be honest. I really like that song!

Oh Constant, today I look above and I see bleak grey clouds in a colourless sky. Ever since I logged in to your page to re-read the funny comments from yesterday.Aghhhhhhh, alas and alack it was gone.Mmmm,it has been there for awhile, as soon as Benson,C.C and I come along, poof it's gone.

Damn one of the greatest, funniest hubs there was around, gone into oblivion. At least Benson got to see his butt in the lime-light before it was expelled. All those funny things you thought of.......now laying in ashes. From your devoted but traumatised fan,BlondePoet

Constant Walker profile image

Constant Walker  says:

Thanks BlondePoet, and I'm glad Benson got to see it before it was taken down. It had "Mature/Adult Content." Can you believe it! I deleted all the images and worte a short paragraph letting everyone know what had happened and resubmitted it for publication. Maybe they'll allow it, maybe not.

I don't get it: It's OK for all those "hubbers" (with the porn-looking Asian avatars) to publish hub after hub of T&A pictorials to get lots of views (with cheesy sexual tags) and raise their Google score and I know a lot of real HP members have complained about it, and HP did nothing. But I publish ONE, innocent, non-offensive butt hub - in which everybody had a good time with - and they take it down.

Oh well ...

blondepoet profile image

Constant you know that is exactly what I thought. I can't believe the amount of pages there are here of images of half naked women. Some hubbers that is all they do, they don't even write, they just use this place as a venue to do sexy pic reviews.

Your Hub should never have come down, never. It showed no breasts,no genitals. It was written so damn clever by you ,it made an extremely interesting funny story. It wasn't just one of those hubs like others, that are just compiled to promote sex and pornography.

Sadly I don't understand either, I just think who-ever made the decision to can it, has been very unfair about it, and should be looking in plenty of other directions instead. I feel for you Constant as you put time, effort and great thought into making that one, one of the great favourites for a lot of us.

Thank you, BP. And you should write to the HP Team and tell them exactly what you said here. Maybe they'll let me repost the images if enough hubbers write to them about it.

That Alcatrazz is F**K'n Cool. I have heard a lot from Yngwie but never anything from Alcatrazz. The singer looks like a wierd 80's version of Scott Weiland. Killer Solo in that song also.

Thanks for posting that! I gotta tell my "shredder friend" about this.

-Adam, isn't it?!  And Yngwie doesn't include Alcatrazz stuff on his Web site either.  And I agree, the singer looks like something gone horribly wrong - even for the 80's!  I also posted a video by Deep Forest, it came to me when I was thinking about choosing a favorite genre.  Inspired by you, so your name's in the text.

jjrubio, thank you.  I don't listen to all the oldie faves as much as I should, but when I do hear them ... wow!  That's what inspired me to do this hub.

Hi CW,

Yes, I too remember watching the Beetles on my Grandparents black &white TV. I don't think my parents had a tv. I was pretty small also, but it's not something you forget - it's one of those life moments.

Sorry, haven't been around much as I'm now working full-time as a freelancer - have to go where the money is.

Hey, I was watching "That Metal Show" on VH1 classic last saturday and they were talking about Alcatraz and how they are working on a new album. Crazy huh!?! They didn't say if Yngwie was going to be in it because they were mostly talking about the singer. They said that he looked the way he looked because he never intended to be in the metal scene and had more of a pop aspiration. Thought that was weird that you introduced me to the band and all of a sudden I hear news about them.
