…a blind date with my Saboteur!

Why are you stuck where you are? In my December 4th article titled Saboteur…who? I introduced the concept of the Saboteur. You may want to read that article to refresh your memory…even if your Saboteur tells you that you don’t need you!

In brief then (for those who don’t have a good handle on their Saboteur…yet), your Saboteur is that little (or not so little) voice that is constantly reminding us of why we need to stay exactly where we are. Your Saboteur could be the single greatest reason why you’re not living the life you want.

Want to fix this?

“You might fail…”  “You’re not good enough…”  “You’re too old…”  “No one ever does it that way…”  “What will everyone think…”   “People will think you’re crazy…”  “You don’t belong…”

Do you recognize this voice? More importantly do you recognize who the voice belongs too? How does this “voice” make you feel?

Are you familiar with the expression “…put a face to the name”? Have you ever experienced this? Maybe with a colleague who you met at a conference last year or someone you met at the party last night? What is that feeling you get when you experience the epiphany and make that connection?

So, what value would there be in putting a face on your Saboteur’s voice? As you’re doubting my last statement become aware of who you’re really listening to…who is really in control!

Time to change.

Today’s exercise is very empowering. You have the opportunity to give a face (maybe even a body, name and personality) to your Saboteur. I invite you to use the space provided to create the perfect image of your Saboteur. Draw, sketch, paint, colour, paste cut-outs from magazines, comics, family photo albums…whatever you need or want. Be creative and have fun.

Next, give your Saboteur a name.

Finally, introduce your Saboteur to the rest of the members. Who are they? What are they doing for you?

Journal, either for yourself or in the comments area for this article, about the experience you had by putting a face to your Saboteur’s voice? What will be different now? Who will be in control now? How will you ensure this shift in power happens?

One last little note…don’t be alarmed if you discover more than one Saboteur hanging around…heck, you might even have a whole posse!
