The Truth Behind Healthy Chocolate
Chocolate has never really been thought of as a nutritious food in spite of its popularity and global use. We consume an average of twelve pounds of chocolate per person, per year; staggering isn't it? Wouldn't it make sense to make sure that at least a portion of that chocolate that you're consuming is actually good for you?
Modern research is proving however that the properties inherent in cocoa can improve our health by reducing free radical and oxidation damage. Oxidation is the result of exposure to toxins and leads to the breakdown of healthy cells. Free radicals are basically unstable molecules which lack an electron, so they are always scavenging from nearby heatlhy cells for that missing electron.
There are numerous environmental toxins that contribute to the increase of free radicals such as; alcohol, cigarettes, household chemicals and pesticides, contaminants in our water and air, antibiotics in meats and dairy products, radiation, high-fat diets, over-exposure to sunlight and even exercise.
Free radical damage has been linked to over 200 chronic and terminal conditions such as:
- Arthritis
- Cancer
- Cataracts
- Alzheimer's/Dementia
- DIabetes
- MS
- IBS
- Fibromyalgia
- Lung Disease
- High Cholesterol
When it comes to fighting the effects of free radical damage, our first line of defense is to eat a diet of foods rich in anti-oxidant properties. A high ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) score means that a food is very efficient at reducing and even eliminating some free radical damage.
Anti-Oxidant Rich Foods ORAC (value per 100 g)
- Cocoa, Unprocessed 26,000
- Chocolate, Dark 13,000
- Acai Berry, Fresh 18,500
- Acai, Freeze Dried Powder 44,200-61,000
- Puple Cabbage 4,200
- Kale 3,700
- Spinach 2,400
- Broccoli 1,200

- Carrot 500
