One surprising tidbit of information that you may like to know if you are a heavy coffee drinker is that excessive coffee drinking has been found to make you more likely to hallucinate. This may seem shocking, but the studies have shown that you can have that side effect with up to 3 cups of brewed coffee. The research was done showing that people with a high caffeine intake, not only from coffee sources, had a three times higher likeliness to hear voices and hallucinate than their counterparts who were drinking about a half a cup of coffee a day. In actuality, most coffee drinkers are not known to commonly hallucinate, but this study showed what can happen when these experiences began to get in the way of daily life.

The amount of coffee that was used in this study was about 315 mg of caffeine, which can equal about four Red Bulls. Therefore, the moral of the story is to watch your over all caffeine intake but to keep enjoying your delicious Java. Caffeine is actually a supplement that will stimulate your central nervous system so that you are kept alert and awake. The statistics show that around 90% of all Americans are depending daily on caffeine of some sort. Not too surprising! When you intake your daily coffee, the caffeine is absorbed into your small intestine through your stomach within a little under an hour from the time that you first drank it. When you moderate caffeine into your daily life, you will see that it can improve your work performance, though when you overdo it, it can cause irritability or anxiety. The study based on the overuse of caffeine went on to show what effect nutritional substances have on hallucinations and other psychotic disorders. The study also showed that caffeine may be linked to hallucinations because of how the body reacts to stress, though if you ever experience a hallucination, just know that it's not necessarily a sign of mental illness and can actually be a somewhat normal occurrence.

The whole point of this study is to show that coffee can be enjoyed easily in moderation, and also highlight the effects that it may have when you do overindulge. I would also like to touch upon another study that pointed out that the best way to consume your coffee daily is by splitting it up into smaller amounts throughout the day. This way, you are avoiding any overdose of caffeine, which may or may not put you at risk for a hallucination, and you are all so keeping your body at a steady pace so you will not be having any sort of caffeine crash or withdrawal. Regardless of the way that you choose to enjoy your coffee, just know that coffee overall does contribute to your health and wellness, and that studies lately have shown that it is an optimal part of protecting your body from disease and other threats. So, would you like one cup or two?
