Lesson One - Which guitar will you buy?

If you have any kind of clue about the kind of music that you like and are wanting to play, your next step will be to get a guitar.

The basics- nylon or steel string. For playing classical or folk music, you'll want to go with the nylon. Acoustic guitars send the string vibrations to the soundboard, and these are amplified in the guitar's body. Mellow tones are produced; steel string guitars give off more of a bright and metallic sound. Your main influence in choice of guitar will likely be the sound produced by your favorite performer.

You don't need something top of the line to start, but get the best you can afford in your price range. A cheaply made guitar won't give you any good playing experience, but a well-made guitar will have you looking forward to your lessons.

Try different guitars. Consider the feel of the neck and which guitar is more comfortable to you. Also look at the string distance from the fret board or "action." Low action is easy to play, but will cause a buzz with intense play or loud picking.

Lesson Two - Step out and learn.

Get over your fear and allow yourself to learn to play acoustic guitar. Money, time, and teachers all play a role in the progress you'll make in learning to play guitar. Then there is you, perhaps the biggest obstacle of all. If you don't react well to challenges, then you may need to adjust your goals until you learn to better manage it. Work on one thing at a time to try and keep your frustration down. If you have trouble with a few chords, work on each of them separately. And move on to the next when you get it right.

Lesson Three - Practice everyday.

You should start your daily practice at half an hour per day. Don't push yourself, but if you can handle more time, then you'll become a guitarist at a much quicker rate. You need to put in the time it takes to learn to play, but also enough time. If you rush, you'll get poor results. Start with a small amount of material, and as you progress add a little more.

Lesson Four - How to Tune Your Guitar

There are guitar tuners online that can help you with your acoustic guitar. You can learn to tune with just a day or two of practice. Once you get an ear for tuning, try to do it without the help of a tuner.

Lesson Five - How to Hold Your Acoustic Guitar

Long practices can take a toll on you. You need to learn how to sit while playing your acoustic guitar. You can find tutorials on the internet that will teach you how to do this, but it's best if you can find someone to show you.
