In today day and age just about everything we do is now done via the internet. We pay bills, buy tickets to movies and shows, order pizzas; shop for cloths, really just almost everything we do has some sort of online ties now days. This is also true when it comes to looking for a job; we now submit online job applications when we are looking work. In fact there are a few companies that require an online job applications be submitted before they will even began the interview process.

This is true for both the higher and lower paying job, like most thing the internet helps make the process a little easier for the company. But that may not be the case for those of us that are looking for work. Because now instead of only having to beat out few other applicants, we have to first find a way to get our online job applications to shine through stacks of hundreds. The question is how to do you make yourself and your online job applications stand out from all the rest? Well, here are a few tips that will help set you apart and hopefully get that dream job you have been looking for.

Online Job Applications - Tip #1

The first online job applications tip is to make sure that the company you are applying to get all the information they are looking for in the application process. Even in the online world incomplete or missing information will quickly get you passed over. Take the time to review the online application form and make sure that include all information. This may seem simple but make sure you are filling out every line just as you would when filling out a hand rewritten application. Companies want to see if you can follow directions and this is your first impression so make sure you follow all the steps in the process.

Online Job Applications – Tip #2

The next tip has to do with what is on your job applications or resumes. When you start applying online you will more than likely be submitting too many different jobs so you application or resume need to reflect this. Each job has a skill sets that are more important to that job and those are what your application needs to reflect. If you were looking for a job as  teacher you may want things on there that show how well you work with kids but they really don’t need to know how that you have the ability to dinner menu for 50 which you picked up from you last job as a caterer. So when you fill out the online job applications just make sure to fill everything out but include content that relates to the different job you are applying to.

Online Job Applications – Tip #3

Now these next couple of tips can be a little difficult when it comes to online job applications but they can really set you apart. First try and find out the contact person name that is going to be reviewing the application, this sometimes is very easy and is displayed in the submission process, sometimes you may have to give the HR department a call and then sometimes you can’t get the information but when you can it opens up a better line of communication. This does not mean that harass the person everyday it just means that you can submit a nice cover letter email with your online job applications and you can then follow up later to find out how things are going.

The next little tidbit is the follow up. Even if you do not have the person name you still want do a follow up when you submit an online jobs application. A follow up is a simple request to see how your application is processing and to see is there is an interview in the future. Now you need to wait at least one week before you try and follow up so that they have had a chance to process the application and you should simply send in a pleasant email asking if they have had a chance to review your application. This helps remind them who you are and will a lot of times get you that interview that you have been looking for and hopefully led to you to a great job.

Thanks for the tips you offer job hunters who may be unfamiliar with online job applications. I particularly appreciate your advice to stay involved after hitting Submit. Just because there’s a Web interface between you and the HR department doesn’t mean the process is entirely out of your hands; there’s still plenty of room to add a human touch after applying online.
