Onsite Massages

Onsite massages are great in any business. Nurses who work in a hospital or nursing home deserve chair massages in their place of work.

It is difficult to imagine anyone who works harder than a nurse in a hospital. Nurses usually work 12 hour shifts. They are on their feet constantly, checking on patients, administering medication, helping in surgery, in intensive care, bathing patients, lifting patients, and the list goes on. Physically, they do a lot and their bodies hurt.

When my first son was born prematurely, I witnessed firsthand for 6 long weeks how hard nurses work to save the lives of these tiny babies. They were amazing, constantly on the move from one baby to another. Monitors would go off on all of their little patients day and night and the nurses remained calm and professional.

Some hospitals bring in massage therapists to perform chair massages on their nurses. A 15 minute chair massage can make all the difference between a cheerful, relaxed nurse and one who is grouchy because her shoulders and back hurt.

Patients who are in pain sometimes give nurses a lot of grief. They can be very demanding. Each nurse is in charge of so many patients on a floor. Sometimes, all of the patients want attention at once.

Nurses do not get to sit down much. When they do, it is to catch up on their charting. Everytime they do anything for or with a patient, they must record it. After a 12 hour shift, a nurse can hurt from head to toe. She/he is in desperate need not only of a chair massage, but a table massage!

Onsite massages are normally chair massage only. A great idea for Christmas and/or birthdays would be to give each nurse a gift certificate for a table massage.

Portable Massage Chairs

Outcalls to homes with portable massage chairs are made primarily for client convenience. Just because they are portable, they are still bothersome for the massage therapist to have to load and unload into a vehicle, carry up and down stairs and on sandy or muddy pathways or snow-covered sidewalks.

Some clients are so busy that the only time they have for a massage is in the evening at home after work. Some will appreciate the fact that you make housecalls and will reward you with a nice tip, while others will bemoan the fact that your housecall charge is higher than your office charge. Never mind that you have wear and tear on your vehicle, not to mention the ridiculous price of gas and the time that it takes to drive across town to get to the client's home.

Some may not have childcare so they have to get a massage at home.  Of course, that may mean that you have to work with little ones in the same room where you are giving the massage.  It can also mean crying babies and fighting kids while you are trying to give a relaxing massage.

Outcalls can be calm and quiet as well.  Always ask the client if you can play a calming CD and if you can light an aromatherapy candle.  Let the client choose the music and candle scent from a variety of CD's and candles that you carry for outcalls.

Whatever the atmosphere in the client's home, try your best to be cheerful as you provide massage therapy for your busy clients.  It is your job to make the client feel relaxed and renewed, despite what may be going on in the home during the massage.

Carry a portable massage chair that is lightweight in the car with you. It should be made out of metal and not wood.  Wooden chairs are heavier and more difficult for the massage therapist to move and to carry.  A sturdy chair with rollers built in its case works best.

Rollers make portable massage chairs easy to take almost anywhere, from a home, office, or to an outdoor location like a fair, carnival, or outdoor sporting event such as a track meet or a football game.
