Oor Wullie! Your Wullie! A'body's Wullie!

Oor Wullie

Oor Wullie(Our William) has been a true Scottish legend since his first appearence in the scottish sunday post news paper in 1937, he has spiky hair always wears dungarees and his chair is an upturned bucket. he and his 3 friends, Fat Boab (bob) Soapy Soutar and wee Eck (little Alec) get up to all kinds of mischief, a bit like Bart Simpson, The stories are written in the Scottish dialect and Wullie has many catch-phrases such as "Crivven's, Help ma boab, and Jings. his favourite pastimes include knocking P.c Murdock's helmet off with his catty (sling shot).stealing apples from peoples gardens and trying to get money by which ever means neccesary without stealing ofcourse, his favourite food is mince and tatties (minced beef and potato's),made by Ma (his mum).

he has a pet (moose) mouse named Jeemy who goes with him in his pocket almost every where, and he has an on off girlfriend Primrose Paterson who appears every now and again in the comic strip.

sometimes but not often characters from the Broons cartoon strip also appear in Oor Wullie's strip and vice-versa.

I buy myself a copy of the album every year at Christmas time, and the Special editions that pop up from time to time.

In March 2006, BBC Scotland documentary Happy Birthday Oor Wullie celebrated the character's 70th anniversary .

The Broon's

The Broon's

The Broon's (Brown's) are a Legendary Comic strip family, also featutred in the sunday post every week since 1936, they live in a tenement flat in 10 Glebe Street Glasgow, they are a very large family with Maw (Mum),Paw (Dad) Hen, Joe, Maggie, Daphne,Horace, the twins(i dont think they have ever been named they are better known as this one and the other one) and the bairn, there is also GrandPaw Broon who doesn't actualy live with the family but he is always there.

Most of the humour derives from the timeless themes of the 'generation gap', stretching the money as far as possible, and the constant struggle for each family member to live in a very small flat with 9 other Broons. In the end the family is always together through it all, getting through life with a gentle good humour as they argue amongst themselves. Another staple of the series is misunderstanding: inevitably the Bairn or the Twins mishear something Granpaw or another family member says, and the whole family act on it until the truth is revealed in the final panel.

I also buy the book every year at Christmas time and the Special editions that appear from time to time.

In December 2005, BBC Scotland documentary Happy Birthday Broons celebrated the family's 70th anniversary.

I have lived in Essex for forty years. I still consider Dundee as my home, well actually Newport on Tay. The Broons and Oor Wullie are as staple to Scotsmen as white pudd'n or haggis. I am pleased someone else, I am sure ther e are millions, appreciate the simple, honest and really truthful way that the way of life is portrayed.

My mother used to work for D.C.Thompson, in Dundee, in arounnd 1942, she still remembers doing the Sunday Post, with our favourite characters of course.

Reply, please, ken.ouchterlonie@yahoo.co.uk.

PS my Father used to play for Dundee, Dundee United and Celtic
