Open Source Spirituality
49Open Source Spirituality
The best religion for me is a combination of the best parts of all religion. I've adapted them as I go along into a kind of open source spirituality, which includes some ritual, meditation, love for humanity but excludes duality and judgement. My version emphasises wisdom and compassion but understands that left to making free choices there will be only a small proportion who make good choices .Learning from decision making is the path to growth and wisdom.
The idea of an open source spirituality which includes aspects of many belief systems and encourages people to weave their own with the threads we already have is one which appeals to me.
Updating the existing belief systems into one which is inclusive and based on love of humanity can include atheists, buddists, hindus etc.
I think of the different traditions as a user interface, acting as a mediator translating cultures into a universal symbolic language.
The machine code instructions are programmed in somewhere as a combination of culture, circumstances and genetics as we grow and we get to choose the user interface which best suits our experience.

Very insightful, I agree!
That's the way it was meant to be (I believe) and happens to be what my own teacher has passed. Experience is the ultimate to find truth plus vision and discernment.

Select Your Own User Interface
The underlying body of human spirituality is a journey towards expanded knowledge and experience. We can all select the user interface we use to access this journey. Every culture produces a variation on what existed in the past and sometimes they are very location specific or tribal, at other times the interface spreads and adapts into the existing cultures.
My advice is to pick your own or take aspects of those which pre exist and combine them into something that works in the time and location in which you have to function. There isn't much point in picking a user interface which is opposed to the prevailing choice of the masses unless it can communicate effectively with your environment.
Human Potential and Creative Commons
It seems to me that the creative commons model along with the type of collaboration and teamwork which is required to produce high quality software is a good model for developing an open source model of spirituality. Each person contributes according to their own experience and has access to proven strategies which have been used to solve specific problems.
This model would include a form of peeer to peer co-counselling and coaching where teams agree to help each other by being available to coach around personal issues. The system would have to include a form of credit for "listening time" and "active listening skills" which can be taught as part of the development of each individual who agrees to be part of a core development team.

Module One - Foundation Skills
Taking a slightly different perspective on the "Open Source Spirituality " basic idea I've developed a course outline for a weekend training event which incorporates the core ideas of the system.
Module One would be an introduction to basic meditation techniques - specifically mindfulness of breathing. Also included in this module would be some basic thinking skills using the "six thinking hats" process developed by edward de bono.
User Outcomes. At the end of this module you should be familiar with the mindfulness of breathing meditation process and be capable of setting up your own meditation session.
You should also be capable of doing a basic analysis using the six thinking hats methodology.
The module is designed to give you the foundation skills in stress management and analysis which will be useful in life and relationships.
Module Two - Buddhist Psychology
The best of buddhist psychology
Module Three - Coaching Skills
Peer to peer skills for listening actively and non directive coaching.

- Spiritual Power - First Steps
An expert's handbook exists for beginners to spiritual power, an ancient book. We know it works because the lady who wrote it trained a group of women in the fifteenth century-during the Inquisition in Spain-- to pray so powerfully that a real estate empire was created that makes Donald Trump look like an amateur, a real estate empire that still exists. - 8 days ago

Digital religion! I like the concept. Not all the negatives and or all the positives. Good thinking!
