Who is Oprah Winfrey
Oprah Winfrey is considered one of the most powerful women of our time since Madam C.J.Walker. She has replaced the so called glass ceiling with concrete opportunity.
Oprah Gail Winfrey (born January 29, 1954) is the American multiple-Emmy Award winning host of The Oprah Winfrey Show, the highest rated talk show in television history.[1] She is also an influential book critic, an Academy Award-nominated actress, and a magazine publisher. She has been ranked the richest African American of the 20th century,[2] the most philanthropic African American of all time,[3] and the world's only black billionaire for three straight years.[4][5][6][7] She is also, according to several assessments, the most influential woman in the world.[8]
Early life
Oprah Winfrey was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, to a Baptist family. She was originally named Orpah Gail Winfrey, after the Book of Ruth. There are conflicting reports as to how her name became "Oprah." According to a 1991 interview with the Academy of Achievement, Winfrey said that when she was born, people didn't know how to pronounce "Orpah," so they put the "P" before the "R" in every place else other than the birth certificate.[9] However, there is the account that the midwife transposed letters while filling out the newborn's birth certificate.[10] Her parents were unmarried teenagers.[11] Her mother, Vernita Lee, was a housemaid, and her father, Vernon Winfrey, was a coal miner and later worked as a barber before becoming a city councilman. Winfrey's father was in the Armed Forces when she was born. After her birth, Winfrey's mother travelled north and Winfrey spent her first six years living in rural poverty with her grandmother, Hattie Mae. Winfrey's grandmother taught her to read before the age of three and took her to the local church, where she was nicknamed "The Preacher" for her ability to recite Bible verses. When Winfrey was a child, her grandmother would take a switch and would hit her with it when she didn't do chores or if she misbehaved in any way.[12]
At age six, Winfrey moved to an inner city ghetto in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with her mother, who was less supportive and encouraging than her grandmother. Winfrey has stated that she was molested by her cousin, uncle, and a family friend, starting when she was nine years old.
Despite her dysfunctional home life, Winfrey skipped two of her earliest grades, became the teacher's pet, and by the time she was 13 received a scholarship to attend Nicolet High School in the Milwaukee suburb of Glendale, Wisconsin. Although Winfrey was very popular, she couldn't afford to go out on the town as frequently as her better-off classmates. Like many teenagers at the end of the 1960s, Winfrey rebelled, ran away from home and ran the streets. When she was 14, she became pregnant, but lost the baby shortly after birth.[13] Also at that age, her frustrated mother sent her to live with her father in Nashville, Tennessee. Vernon was strict, but encouraging and made her education a priority. Winfrey became an honors student, was voted Most Popular Girl, joined her high school speech team, and placed second in the nation in dramatic interpretation. She won an oratory contest, which secured her a full scholarship to Tennessee State University, a historically black institution, where she studied communication. At age 18, Winfrey won the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant.
Winfrey's boyfriend from high school, Anthony Otey, would later recall what Winfrey was like during those early years:
"...she knew what she wanted very early in life. She said she wanted to be a movie star. She wanted to be an actress. And I praise God that she's done that. She was willing to put aside a lot of other things. Back in the seventies, drugs had started entering the schools, and that kind of thing. We were involved in integration and those fights in those years. We were actively involved in that, but she knew what she wanted to do. She worked hard at it, and when her ship started to sail, she got aboard.[14]"
Winfrey's grandmother had said that ever since Winfrey could talk, she was on stage. In her youth she played games interviewing her corncob doll and the crows on the fence of her family's property. But her true media career began at age 17, when Winfrey worked at a local radio station while attending Tennessee State University.
Working in local media, she was both the youngest news anchor and the first black female news anchor at Nashville's WLAC-TV. She moved to Baltimore's WJZ-TV in 1976 to co-anchor the six o'clock news. She was then recruited to join Richard Sher as co-host of WJZ's local talk show People Are Talking, which premiered on August 14, 1978. She also hosted the local version of Dialing for Dollars there as well.[15]
At the age of 19, she landed her first broadcasting job as a reporter for radio station WVOL in Nashville, TN. In 1971 she was named Miss Black Nashville AND Miss Black Tennessee. She switched majors her sophomore year to media and becomes the first African-American anchor at WTVF-TV in Nashville.

Hi Teeray, I really admire Oprah and when I was doing my research about her I had a hard time to compress the data about her because I don't want to omit some important details therein. I just deleted some repetitions then rearranged, I'm glad you like it. Thanks ;)
Love oprah. I can't get through to her on E-mail. I have big questions for Dr. Oz. Computer is new to my husband and myself. I keep getting it kicked back to me and now I'm frustated. Can you help. Thank you, Joanne (Jody) Hanson. Our E-mail is kenneth_hanson@comcast.net. Please don't post our E-mail.

Hello Miss Oprah,
Help!!
What is going on?
got a minute?
I think of the word help and you are the first person that pops in my mind. Let me start from de begining.
I migrated to de USA from Barbados a few years ago. I was born in St, Lucia (you know where dah is?)
Anyway, I have been watching all this mess that is happening in this world today and I have to tell you I am scared to have my 14 year son involved with this mess. Do not get me wrong I am not saying everything or everyone has issues but, have you watched the new lately? What the hey?
Like you, I was abused on numerous occasions and unfortunately, I do not have the pleasure of not having this person in my life. How can you just forget that you have a big brother.. Anyhow, what get me mad this evening was when I was watching a documentary on channel 5 about de us government. These two gentlemen were speaking about de US governement and what happened in 911. mind you, I did not loose anyone in the tradey but, if you hear de things these people had to say it would make you say, hmmmmmm.......
They were actaully saying they were instructions given to make de building collapse and it did not actually fall as seen.
de lease holder requested for it to be demolished! Not to mention all de stuff that is going on with Mr Obama.
Girl if you let me come on your show I would have so much to say you would ask me to shut up!!!!
Thank ya for ya time
Miss opinionated ..
Holla back as they say in America!
PS. I am writing this in dialect so do not think I do not know how to speak proper english..

Hey doodsdpogi,
What a nice and informative article about Oprah! Thanks for writing. I have learned, not only about Oprah, but about how an excellent article is put together on hubpages. I really like this article.
The brief 'timeline' wrap-up at the close is a nice touch - and I liked the mention of 'concrete opportunity' at the start!
Keep it up! *thumbsup*
