The oral herpes virus infection is one of the most common virus infections that can occur to people of all ages. Oral herpes, also known as herpes labialis, is a viral infection that leads to the formation of cold sores. Cold sores or fever blisters are small, reddish and painful blisters that are usually found on the lip and the mouth area.
What Virus Causes Fever Blisters?
Fever blisters found in the mouth are caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 or the hsv-1. This cold sore virus is highly contagious and easily spread by direct skin contact with the affected area and sharing of body fluids. Indirect contact through sharing of personal items such as towels, toothbrush, lipstick and spoon, can also lead to the transmission of the virus.
Statistics of Oral Herpes
It is believed that 90% of Americans have been exposed to and have experienced one form of herpes at some time in their life. Half a million Americans are diagnosed every year, and to date, there is about 50 million of the population who have contracted the virus. However, most are not aware that they have them because the symptoms are hardly noticeable and no onsets of cold sore outbreaks are seen.
First Signs of Oral Herpes
The first signs of oral herpes virus infection usually occur within a week or two from contracting the hsv-1. Initially, you might see a small bump accompanied by some tingling, itching and mild pain in the mouth or lips.
Within two or three days, the spots begin to show itself and turn into painful, fluid-filled blisters. These blisters last for about a week then begin to breakdown, crust over and form a scab. After a few more days, the scab peels off and the sore disappears.
The difficult part about oral herpes virus infection is that the herpes virus does not leave the body for good. When the cold sores heal, the virus just moves to the nerve endings and stays there in dormancy, with the possibility of recurring anytime it is triggered.
Cold Sore Remedy Options
There are a number of cold sore remedies that are available for treating fever blisters. Though herpes virus cannot be totally killed in the system, there are ways to manage the symptoms of oral herpes and shorten the duration of cold sores. Remedies include over-the-counter or prescription medicines, home remedies as well as herbal treatment methods.
Does Hydrogen Peroxide Kill The Cold Sore Virus?
One of the most popular and safer cold sore treatments is the application of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) onto the blistered area. This method known as herpes hydrogenation has been suggested to have the ability to kill cold sore virus.
Once highly oxygenated, the herpes virus reportedly loses its strength to live so that they eventually die. Hydrogen peroxide for cold sore treatment comes in many forms: topical H2O2, oral H2O2, intravenous H2O2 with DMSO, hyperbaric oxygen, ozone insufflations, and so on.
These are usually employed in combination with other methods. Oxygenation in the body is actually believed to increase the body's resistance to free radicals, bacterial infection and oral herpes viral infections.
