Fashion icon Audrey Hepburn's fashion heritage has Orange Coat connections. Retro or not, it's an Orange Coat year!

Typically, fashions for fall/winter annually return to browns, greys, blacks ... a return to 'office fashion', if you will, after a summer where fashion media promote frothy light colorful vacation/party/outdoor party/leisure clothes.

But this fall, there's a bold new color for fall .... think pumpkins, chrysanthemums, autumn aspen leaves .... think Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Nope, not her sleek black dressses, not the trench in the rain chasing 'Cat,' but the bright orange coat from the 'explore Manhattan' scenes with co-star George Peppard. AND for additional classic fashion orange coat heritage, Hepburn also had a fantastic orange coat in the 1963 movie Charades! (Remember Hepburn visiting Walter Matthau at his office in her orange coat and Leopard hat? See video at end of column. For more about Leopard's fashion popularity, click here) Designers clad the iconic Hepburn in orange coats in two movies...surely designers are thinking this look is due for a bigtime return to popularity!

And, with economic woes on every evening newscast, well, if a woman's going to let loose of (or charge) a few bucks on a new fashion addition...who wants more brown, grey, black? So perk up...forget your troubles, come on get happy...get some orange into your wardrobe!

The orange coat began showing up a couple of season ago with the 'cutting edge designers,' those French and Italian designs that mean little to most USA women's wardrobes, but now ORANGE is spreading across more main stream clothing labels and stores until it's a hot look for a new wardrobe addition.

Here's a fun, fashion review of ORANGE! Enjoy

What color therapy theories say about orange

According to color therapy websites, the color orange is a shade you definitely want to consider. One site notes that "orange urges you to get out into the world and create something grand! Orange is a very high energy color. Its creativity juices are extremely intoxicating and sweet tasting. Wearing orange is fun and can make you feel quite playful. Artists love dabbling with orange hues. Orange screams with sexual energy too, not surprising since orange is associated with the sacral chakra. Because of its highly-charged intensity some people cannot comfortably wear this color. Adorning yourself with an orange accent piece can add a hint of playfulness." (About.com/holistic healing)

The high collared, bold buttoned wool orange jacket from Banana Republic has a suggested retail of $130.00. They call the color 'flaming ember orange.'

A very bright orange trench with zippers and over-sized buttons from Nordstrom department stores, in color they call 'burnt orange.' Suggested retail $220.00.

From silouhettes.com, a more subdued orange color boiled wool jacket, $69.00, in color they call 'spice.'

Fourth, from fashion-critics acclaimed designer, Tory Burch, her label's 'equestrian orange' cotton knee length jacket, $495.00. Available from Bloomingdale's.

Below, from the Jones New York label, their "Pumpkin Spice" boucle wool sleek and simple hip-length jacket with hidden button closure. Available at Nordstrom stores, suggested retail is $179.00.

Although the very bright trench above is labeled by its manufacturer as 'burnt orange,' the internationally recognized color experts, Pantone, have their official 'burnt orange' as formula 16-448, a much deeper, browner orange than the trench above. The Pantone company advises fashion designers, car makers, fabric creators for rugs, upholstery, other commercial needs, paint companies, make-up colors, even nail polish makers on the trendy colors for the year, the coming decade, etc. And the Pantone website lists their 'burnt orange' color 16-448, as one of the top ten colors for autumn fashions. Another top orange shade is named 'glazed ginger' by the Pantone company.

Pantone's official fashion color report, according to Reuters news service, comes out at the same time as New York's Fashion Week. Which for Fall/Winter fashions is the previous February. This report on color trends allows commercial buyers for dept. stores, boutiques, home shopping networks, etc. to know how to follow the current trends.

Does orange hair count when it comes to sexy? I had a full head of orange hair when I was in elementary, but the only reviews I got were nasty name-calling... Pippi, Woodie, Carrot top, LOL!

Orange is a great color for a wedding theme, especially for a traditional autumn wedding or a funky 60s-ish spring wedding...can't imagine being made fun of for liking orange...it's really such a versatile color...goes with browns, golds, yellows, blues, many pink/fuschia tones, and all the neutrals beiges, navy, tans, greys...thanks for stopping by and best on your wedding plans!

This Hub has got a thumbs up! Orange is difficult from the view of flattery to skin tones but it is Very Cheering, and we'll probably need a lot of that this winter!

Cturnip, yes indeed! Fashion forward! Great edgy purchase you made...and it's still IN now 3 years later! Hurrah!

2patricias...theirs probably some shade of orange that fits each skin tone, like pinks that run from barest blush to intense magentas...and maybe just a touch here and there...an cinammon scarf with a camel v-neck...see my scarf column for a pick of Faye Dunaway this way.

Thumbs up! I loved that Katie Holmes coat, it is so chic. I've just bougth myself a similar one but single breasted and red. I love wearing red, but I think I will start considering orange after I read your hub; it looks rich and fun.
