Where To Grow Your Orchids

Growing Orchids is relatively simple and easy. However, you have to consider important conditions such as lighting, temperature, air moisture and air circulation when deciding where to grow your orchids.

There are many easy-to-grow varieties of orchids that are able to adapt easily to any temperature. Moth Orchids and Lady’s Slippers are ideal for indoor growing. Both have enduring flowers, and the latter has such an exotic look with unusual warts, hair and striped colors.

SELECTING AN ORCHID

There are three orchid species that are most suitable for indoor growing – Phalaenopsis or moth orchids that requires lesser light and adapt easily to indoor settings; Cattleya species which requires much light to really grow well indoors; and the Dendrobiums species.

In the Greenhouse

Orchids can adapt to warm or cold temperatures. In order to thrive, however, the night time temperature should be 15 degrees cooler than the daytime temperature. They require more water along with good air circulation if kept in the open. Generally, a good greenhouse is the key for a long-lasting and healthy orchid.

Under Artificial Light

The proper amount of light for each orchid is crucial to their growth. Some need to be placed outside in shaded areas to get sufficient light to flourish. While several kinds are contented inside the house with minimal light coming from the window; growers have the option of using fluorescent lights to suit their needs.

The Great Outdoors

Your orchids can be grown on trees where there is enough sunlight, and they should be placed sideways to prevent water from staying at the base or on the ground. Terrestrial varieties usually grow beside streams or brooks, for they can tolerate more moisture than other orchid varieties.

Indoor Orchids should also be taken outdoors for them to enjoy natural sunlight and fresh air.

Kinds of orchids for the outdoors:

Some orchid varieties that are best for outdoor growing are those that flourish under strong, yet filtered, daylight. Some of these are Cymbidium, Dendrobium, Cattleya Hybrids, Laelia, and Stanhopea.

Care for Outdoor Orchids

To ensure proper health and growth of your outdoor orchids, be sure to constantly check plants for problems and use artificial chemicals only when necessary. Watch these plants especially carefully during the summer, and take them indoors when the temperature gets too low.

So have you decided where to put your orchids? That should leave you something to ponder on, then you’ll be ready to take up the next lesson – Orchid lighting requirements.
