Why Organic Cotton?

It is only common sense that children, with their developing systems and less experienced immune systems, would be more susceptible to toxins and pesticide residues.

Approximately 25% of the herbicides and 10% of the pesticides used overall are used on cotton. In fact, it is estimated that close to 150 lbs of chemicals per acre are used to produce conventional cotton. That is a lot of toxins soaking into the fibers that are eventually going to cover your child's delicate skin.

A positive reason to use organic cotton children's clothing is that a lot of these items are manufactured in cottage industries, involved in Fair Trade practices and in general, ethically and responsibly run companies. The clothes are, on average, well made and cute. As organic cotton becomes more in demand more companies are springing up to meet those demands and there is more variety in what is available.

Create a Healthy, Non-toxic Environment

Cotton clothing is not the only fabric available in an organic version. You can surround your children with organic sheets, organic mattresses and many other non-toxic items. Some of the other items you can buy are:

  • Organic towels
  • Organic cloth diapers
  • Organic diaper covers
  • Organic onesies
  • Organic bedding
  • Organic fabric to sew yourself

By insulating your children in a non-toxic environment you allow their bodies to grow and develop with out the added stresses of dealing with harsh chemicals.

Amazon

With access to the internet it isn't hard to find organic clothing for children and babies. You might be surprised to know that Amazon has a variety of organic cotton clothing for all ages.

They carry some of the biggest brand names involved in organic cotton today. In fact, some of the brands that they carry are:

  • Under the Nile
  • Bella Baby
  • Positively Organic
  • Farmer's Kids

Here are some of the organic clothes for kids featured on Amazon.

eBay is a Good Source

Organic clothing is expensive. There is no way around it, you are probably going to spend up to 50% more for organics. While it is certainly worth the cost in the long run, sometimes it is very hard on the budget.

Shopping on eBay for organic children's clothes is a great way to support the environment and save some money, too. Always ask questions and make sure you understand whether or not the item is new or used. Ask for specifics about the manufacturer and the condition of the clothing and check the clothes thoroughly when you get them.

You may be surprised to find that there is a huge selection of organic clothes for all ages. Search with terms like:

  • organic
  • organic cotton
  • organic kids clothes
  • organic girls clothes

  • pesticide free fabrics
  • non toxic fabric

The Very Best Reason to Buy Organic Cotton

Other Places to Buy Organic Clothing for Children

Of course there are thousands of small websites that carry organic clothing for children.

Happy Green Bee doesn't have alot of variety but the items they do have are colorful and cute! There are several imaginatively designed outfits for infants and toddlers.

Zoey and Sprout has a huge selection of onesies and t-shirts with cute sayings on them. Two of the best are:

  • My Mommy is Hotter than Your Mommy
  • My Stroller is a Hybrid

They are hoping to continue to expand their line of organics through 2009.

Kidbean has some more traditionally styled organic cotton clothing.

Bambino Land has clothing made from organic cotton as well as more unusual organic fabrics. Soy based and bamboo based fabrics are sustainable and durable. They use organic wools, alpaca, and hemp and then dye them with low impact dyes to get the beautiful colors.

Baby Organics has a large selection of clothes for infants, both boys and girls.

Research the Company

The more demand there is for organic clothing and the more popular it becomes the more the prices will even out. It won't be such a specialty item. Along with growth, though, often comes the tendency to loosen up on the ethics and the companies can become very relaxed about their "green-ness" as they get bigger.

Even though organic clothing costs more, the idea of supporting small businesses is a particularly pleasant one. Of course, if you knew that your dollars were not only buying you a quality item of clothing but were going to help support a family you would be less likely to feel like you has spent too much.

Because of this always check into the company you are buying from. Find out who makes the clothing, where your money is going and if the companies ethics match your own.
