Organic Diapers
76Your baby’s skin is new, pure, and sensitive. Why smother them with harsh chemicals?
Current research states that up to 60 percent of the chemicals that come in contact with skin are absorbed into the body. Non-organic diapers can contain chemicals that can harm your baby. Organic diapers are perfect for babies with sensitive skin, the parent who strives for healthier living, or the eco- friendly parent.
Organic diapers contain no harmful chemicals such as harsh dyes or sodium polyacrylate, This is an absorbent gel that is used to keep the wetness in a normal ,non-organic diaper. Sodium polyacrylate is so absorbent that it can dry out the natural oils in your baby’s skin. It can even cause the baby's skin to develop cracks and chafing from dryness. In some extreme cases it has been linked to bleeding and lacerations on baby’s skin.
Materials in Organic Diapers
Organic diapers are made with 100 percent organic materials. There are a wide variety of materials used to make organic diapers. Generally the diapers are not bleached, so they may look a little off color. This is a small price to pay when you consider all of the chemicals present in conventional diapers. Some materials and components used in making organic diapers are:
Organic disposables:
- Organic cotton
- Wood pulp
- Wool
- Sodium polyacrylate
Organic cloth:
- Organic cotton
- Bamboo
- Velour
- Wool

Disposable Diapers, Flushable Diapers or Cloth Diapers?
Organic Disposable Diapers
Organic disposable diapers are better for your baby than the non organic counterpart because there are fewer chemicals used in making them. There are less dyes and bleaches used to make the materials. However, most organic disposable diapers still contain sodium polyacrylate. There are some companies that use wool as a natural absorbent instead of sodium polyacrylate however these tend to be extremely expensive..
Organic Flushable Diapers
Organic flushable diapers can be flushed, used as compost, or placed in the garbage can without having a negative impact on the environment. They are completely biodegradable. In fact within 50 to 150 days they will be completely broken down. They are made by a company called G Diapers. They have a video demonstration you can view here:
Organic Cloth Diapers:
Organic cloth diapers are the most cost effective choice. They can be expensive to begin using however they are completely re usable so you don’t have to buy more. Cloth diapers are naturally absorbent. They do not rely on chemicals compounds to absorb moisture away from your baby’s skin. Cloth diapers are made from breathable materials that allow air to circulate. There is a very large variety of cloth diaper styles from pins and plastic pants to the very popular All-in-One cloth diaper.
You can make your own organic cloth diapers and save money by using organic fabric.

Where to Buy Diapers
There are many companies
that provide organic diapers. Some can be found in local stores like
Babies R Us or Target, and others can be found online. Your options
are almost endless. When it comes down to it the choice is yours and
you should do what is best for your baby, your budget and you. Remember that eBay is one way to find affordable, organic diapers.
Here are some online stores and companies that make organic diapers:
- Seventh Generation is a great company. However they do use sodium polyacrylate in their diapers. The organic disposable diapers that Seventh Generation makes costs about the same as a non organic competitor like Pampers or Huggies
Huggies has just released a line of disposable diapers that are made with organic cotton and less dye
Tushies are a company that makes 100% organic disposable diapers. They use wool as the absorbent component in their diapers
- Heavenly Organic
- Tiny Birds Organic
It may take a little more time to find the organic, gentle diapers you are looking for. By researching various brands you can make a choice that you, and your baby, are comforatble with.

some really scary studies have shown that babies absorb some very harmful incredients from baby powders and lotions as well! Myself I'd go with the organic cloth diapers, sure its a little more work for me but its a whole lot less work for the planet!
