Borrowing A Cow

A man expressed his desire to borrow a cow from a wealthy man, hence he sent his messenger to deliver a note to the wealthy man. The wealthy man was just entertaining a few guests. To avoid being taken as an illiterate, he took the note and acted as if he was able to read it. While he read it, he nodded his head furiously and told the messenger, "I understand perfectly. I will go personally in a moment."

Blind Faith in Geomantic Omens

Once, there was a man that believed strongly in geomantic omens. He even looked for a geomancer for all the different signs that were beneficial or harmful. While he was sitting by a wall one day, the wall suddenly toppled down onto him. He cried for help in pain and his servants immediately dashed over to see what had happened. They told the man, "Please be patient and wait, Master. We will have to ask the geomancer if it will be a good omen to break the ground today!"

What To Say And What Not To Say

A foolish man invited four good friends to a banquet that was held to celebrate his birthday. At noon, Zhang, Wang and Lee have already arrived, but his last guest, Zhao did not turn up. They waited for a long time but still caught no sight of Zhao. The foolish man asked nervously, "Why is the one that should have come not here?"

His friend Zhang who was a sensitive person was very hurt by those words and said sadly, "If the one that should have come is not here, then I am be the one that should not be here. All right then, if that is what you want." With this, he left in a hurry.

The foolish man sighed and said, "He who should not have left has left us."

Wang, standing beside him, heard it and said, "You just said that he who should not have left has left. That means I am the one who should leave. Fine, I have to leave too."

The remaining friend, Lee, told the foolish man, "You must learn to know what to say and what not to say. If not, you will frustrate your guests and send them away even if you do not want it."

The foolish man heard it and replied, "Those two are much too sensitive and misunderstood what I said. I was not even referring to them."

It was Lee's turn to flare up, "So it is I who should not have come and I who should have left." He left angrily, leaving the foolish man to ponder over his mistakes.
