Orlando Florida Attractions (other than Disney)

This is actually a good question. I mean, what's there to do in Orlando, FLa., if you leave out Disney. If someone says they're going on an Orlando vacation, you just assume they're going to the Disney World Resort. So, who here knows any good touristy places like art galleries or museums or historical places in Orlando? No? Here's what I'll do. Give you a list of places in and around Orlando, which can be labelled as tourist attractions, but which have nothing to do with amusement parks or Disney. Basically, let's say it's a get to know Orlando tour.

Then there's the Garden House Gallery at the Harry P. Leu Gardens, on 1920 North Forest Ave. These are the 'official' art galleries. Other than these, there are a lot more, like the Atlantic Center for the Arts and the Wyland Gallery.

Speak of Museums, and Orlando has the The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, the Orlando Museum of Art, and the Orange County Regional History Center, among others. Special note for the Kennedy Space Center, if you're fond of visiting museums.

Moving from art and museums to architecture, we have the rich and well preserved history of Orlando's Downtown Historic District - 60 historic buildings from yesteryear spread over 8 blocks, surrounded by skyscrapers.

If you get bored of history and art, you can shift to the freshness of the Orlando Farmers Market at Lake Eola Park (every Sunday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.). Since you're in the downtown area, you might as well visit the Greenwood Cemetery with its lush greenery and graves of famous people, and then there's Loch Haven Park, which is to Orlando what Central Park is to New York. And Orlando isn't as staid as you might think. The downtown area has a lot of nightclubs and bars and restaurants, which come alive late in the evening. Here's a comprehensive guide to Orlando's nightlife.

So these are the major things to do in Orlando, if you leave out the amusement parks, theme parks, rides and associated stuff. If, however, you want to get the full Orlando experience, which inlcudes all of the above and Disney, you need to get a Go Orlando Card, which gives you access to over 50 of the major attractions in Orlando. Or you could take a Greyline City tour to avoid the hassle.

Personally speaking, I'm not one to go around on a holiday in an airconditioned bus. Kinda takes the fun out of the vacation. What I mean is, half the fun of traveling is in the travel itself. I prefer tramping it on foot and using the local transport where necessary. You get the know the city, take breathers at unkown diners and talk to strangers. That way you learn more about the city than you ever would from a tour guide.
