Very Serious

Ostomy is a very serious and rarely employed procedure usually only performed when there is no other option available or a patient's life is in danger. Ostomy is a blanket term for any kind of procedure in which a hole is made in the patient's body to remove waste or help the body perform its normal functions when it is no longer able to do so on its own. When the anus is longer a viable exit for waste from the body an ostomy must be performed to reroute the body's normal waste tract. Ostomy Accessories will be important.

While there may be a lot of different forms of ostomy procedures currently in practice, they all share one common trait. The basic premise of an ostomy procedure is that the body will be opened via a hole known as a 'stoma' and from that stoma the intestines will be cleansed of waste material.

The ostomy procedure always features a 'stoma' which is the name of the opening made during the procedure itself. It is from this stoma that the waste material is removed from the body itself. One of the most common forms of the ostomy procedure is known as the Colostomy. This procedure involves the bypassing of the colon. Once the procedure is complete the stoma is reversed and the intestine tract is healed.

Colostomy

By far the most common of all ostomy procedures is the Colostomy, which is designed to alleviate the colon from active processes by bypassing it externally and cleansing waste directly. This is the most frequently employed ostomy procedure and has the most widely accepted uses.

A Loop Colostomy is a deviation from the normal Colostomy and is based around the removal of a loop of intestine from within the abdomen. This loop of intestine is further placed on an external machine designed to help facilitate the bodily digestive functions of the intestine to help the body cleanse itself more naturally.

The Double Barrel Colostomy features two stomas in the abdomen that allow the drainage of both waste and mucus in separate aspects. For this reason this form of procedure is best used in situations where no other option is available and waste removal is critical to the welfare of the patient.
