Our Reunion

Part 13

I’d been working off my list of undone house chores when the phone rang. Marie was calling to find out if I wanted to go to the schoolhouse that her nephew, Michael, goes to? She said there was a function going on in the main auditorium and would I like to go to see it? Okay, now it’s a choice. Work around the house or go to a sit down affair? I chose the school.

I had put away my tools and equipment and had taken a shower. Got dressed and was headed to the door when I started to pick up my keys when I thought, “I’m going to the school to see something, but, what school? Where is it? I started for the phone when it rang. I picked it up and as I started to answer, Marie said, “Hello Cal. Glad I caught you. When I talked to you last I forgot to tell you the name of the school or where it is.” I pulled the phone back and looked around. I said, “How do you do that? I was just about to pickup the phone when you called. You are scary sometimes. Alright, give me the information please.”

Marie gave me directions and all. Then she had said that I was to come in and sit down towards the front at the school. She told me she would find me so would I save her a place next to me? Yes I would. She said she would be there shortly but for me to enjoy. I hung up, picked up my keys again and left. For the life of me I can’t figure out how she does things like that.

I get to the school without any problems. Parked, got in and seated. I didn’t spot Marie anywhere. I didn’t know Michael, so I was lost. Oh well. I wonder what this play is? ‘The Program Guide’ said it was something called “A search for my friend, the strange lady”. Cute. I know one of them myself.

Everyone is seated and the lights go down. The narrator comes out between the curtains and starts the monologue. Marie is still not here. I hope something didn’t happen and she’s going to miss this. I hope to Heaven not.

The monologue is over and I didn’t really hear to much of it because I was worried about Marie. I hope she’s okay. The plays starting and she’s still not here. The lights go all the way down and a spotlight comes on as the curtains start opening. A little boy chasing a little girl runs across the stage from the right side. The little girl stops and turns and points a finger at the boy and puff, a big cloud of smoke and he’s gone. I was trying to figure out how they made him disappear when I saw Marie start across the stage from the left side. She walks over to the little girl and starts talking to her. My mouth drops. I thought this was a school play. Marie is dressed up in a witch’s outfit. Damn. She even has the broom I had given her from Zia. I thought, I’m glad you made it Marie. I settled back to watch the show. This should be good.
