Instead of lawn they use gravel in a variety of colors and place native plants such as cactus varieties in their garden areas. Rosemary and lavender both smell and look beautiful in the front or backyard. They require very little maintenance or water. Those in the west could create a lovely patio area in their front yard for entertaining. This could be a lovely area to share a glass of wine with the neighbors.
