If you are like most homeowners who find themselves wishing for a less cluttered porch, or garden, or backyard or patio; then it might be a great idea in invest in an outdoor storage cabinet or two. What is an outdoor storage cabinet? Well, as the name suggests, this is a type of free standing (stand alone) storage cabinet that is constructed exclusively for the outdoor use. It is usually made from lightweight but sturdy materials so that it can easily be moved to from one area to another. Usually, a cabinet piece like this can be small and compact; but there are also specially made cabinets that are tall or wide enough to accommodate the largest tools or toys that needs to be tucked away. At the same time, an outdoor cabinet should have a storage space that could keep its interior dry and safe from the elements.

Waterproof models are ideal in settings where there can be a lot of moisture build up. These models help eliminate the need to constantly move or protect the furniture pieces when heavy rains or snow bear down unexpectedly. So how can you choose the outdoor storage cabinet for your home? Here are some tips.

Tip 1: What Do You Store?

Try to determine first exactly what kind of “things” you want to store away. Incredibly, many people never do this. The usual thinking goes: one outdoor cabinet should serve a multitude of functions. But this often leads to a storage space that stores everything else except the clutter that needs to be hidden away in the first place. Determining what items you wish to tuck away will help you save a lot of money and will provide you the right selections of outdoor cabinets that you can choose from. For example: your kids tend to leave their toys and playthings in the garden or the front yard. A small, light wooden outdoor cabinet with a slanted lightweight lid can serve as an outdoor toy box. You can teach your kids how to pick up their toys on their own. This is a far better choice than acquiring a tall cabinet that can topple over if your little ones try to reach for the upper drawers. The same is true if you want to store away simple gardening tools like the water hose, spade, and seeds.

Tip 2: Waterproof or Not?

Try to determine whether or not you really need a waterproof storage cabinet. Although this would seem like a logical choice, you might encounter a few complications along the way when you buy such a cabinet. Waterproofed outdoor storage is usually made from aluminum, and often housed in cabinets made from soft wood, or wicker, bamboo or rattan. But the thing is: aluminum is a corrosive element that may damage other metal surfaces. In short, this is not the ideal place to store your metal gardening tools, aluminum based toys or even small items like screwdrivers or hammers. Sometimes, waterproofed storage cabinets may be unnecessary. If you want to keep your “valuables” dry, you may want to buy non-waterproof cabinets and store them in the sheltered part of your porch, garden, backyard or patio.

Tip 3: Limited Space?

If you have limited space, you may want to think of both form and functionality. Your outdoor cabinet does not have to look like a cabinet at all. In fact, some of the newer models you can find can double up as another furniture altogether. For example: you have a griller on your porch or backyard. Instead of buying two separate furniture pieces for your kitchen storage cabinets (for tucking away your grilling paraphernalia) and another one for a table that you can use while cooking, why not buy one flat surfaced kitchen storage cabinet and install it near the griller? This way, you can use the cabinet top as a table too. Or, you may also want to use bench storage cabinets. Not only do you get additional seats, but the storage areas underneath are great places to keep unwanted items. A modified outdoor coffee table can also become a storage cabinet. And lastly: what design would suit your exterior space? As a rule, any sheltered space would benefit from wooden furniture, since you are bound to find complementing wood in covered porches or the sheltered part of the backyard. But you can literally go crazy when it comes to open spaces. Wrought iron, wicker and bamboo storage cabinets are ideal for areas that get a lot of sunshine.
