Patio Furniture Choices

There are several different types and many styles of patio furniture and the choice can be a little overwhelming. Here I will try to explain some of the benefits and disadvantages of some of the different types of outside patio furniture you might look at.

Before you can decide on the right patio furniture for you, you need to think about how you will use it. If it will rarely be used you might choose differently to another family who will use it every day.

You need to think about the different materials used to make patio furniture. Which do you like and which would suit the setting they will be placed in. Modern glass and aluminium furniture looks great in a modern setting but might look out of place in somewhere more traditional.

What Is Patio Furniture?

Patio furniture is usually tables, chairs and loungers that are designed to be used on an outside patio area with a hard surfaced flat floor.

The floor may be significant because some furniture may not be too stable if used on an uneven surface and this could lead to chairs tipping over or chair-legs sinking into the ground and it might spoil your day to see your beautiful new glass top patio table falling over and breaking because it's fine and stylish table-legs are not stable on a rough surfaced patio area.

Metal Patio Furniture

There may be several metals used to make patio furniture. The most common would be Aluminium and Steel. Each has certain advantages.

Aluminium is light and reasonably cheap so it is often used to make faitrly low cost lightweight patio sets but there also some top quality outdoor furniture sets made of this material.

It is reasonably tough and resistant to the effects of the weather. It is possible to get pitting and surface corrosion with aluminium but it does not usually seriously weaken the main material.

Cheap aluminium patio sets may have minimal material used in manufacture which is fine for normal purposes but aluminium bends easily and if the chair legs should become bent or damaged it could lead to collapse when someone sits down.

Steel is strong and cheap but can be affected by corrosion and rust. If the steel used has been galvanised it becomes very weather and rust resistant. Steel patio furniture is avalable in many different styles and often comes painted in a variety of different colors.

Wrought Iron patio furniture is perhaps the toughest and longest lasting patio furniture you can get. It is very heavy, very strong and almost completely ignores the effects of the weather. Wrought iron patio sets are likely to survive as long as you do if they are looked after.

Patio Furniture Protective Covers

Most outside patio furniture is designed to withstand the effects of the weather and does so very well but if you want to keep your patio dining set clean and looking good it is worthwhile investing in some patio furniture set protective covers.

Covers will keep your furniture clean and dry and enable you to make use of it at a moments notice without the need to give the seats a quick wipe down with a damp cloth or to brush a film of dust away before your visitors are able to sit down safely.

Concrete Patio Furniture

Concrete is one of the most hard wearing and weather resistant materials around but it might not be your first though when it comes to selecting patio furniture.

It may be less common but there are some surprisingly stylish designs in concrete furniture for the garden and some of those are suitable for patio areas. They are rugged and unlikely to fall over or break and if you plan to have your patio furniture in an area where people can easily get to it in the dead of night you can feel fairly sure that concrete furniture is unlikely to get stolen thanks to it's weight and difficulty in moving it.

If you do plan on moving your furniture around this weight can be a disadvantage but the stability it offers can make it a safer option for the elderly and infirm who may not be so nimble and find difficulty sitting on lightweight furniture that moves if you nudge it as you go to sit down.

Offset Patio Umbrella  says:

Good read. Another important part of the outdoor experience is the offset patio umbrella. It'll keep you cool in the sun...and not get in your face like regular umbrellas. ;)

Yes, an offset umbrella is an important addition to any patio set. Thanks for mentioning that.
