If you want to increase self esteem you are going to have to take some time to reflect on why you might feel less than confident about yourself and your ability to accomplish whatever you want to do. Not everyone had an ideal childhood, and not all of us received the nurturing and encouragement that we would have liked to receive from our parents. But it's never too late to change your life going forward.
Low self esteem comes from only one place--within you. You are the one who decides how the events of your life will impact your life. Every moment of every day events happen. We are the ones who decide how we will interpret those events. For example you are walking around outside and a black cat crosses your path. You can get upset and decide that this is a sign of "bad luck" and be out-of-sorts for the rest of the day, or you can crouch down and greet the kitty, giving it a pat on the head or a rub behind the ears and then keep on walking.
To overcome low self esteem you
will need to change the stories that you have been telling yourself
about your circumstances, your abilities and prospects for the future.
In order to have low self esteem you have to continue to tell yourself
those depressing, dismal, sad stories. But what if you decided that
today is the day you are going to let all of that go? What if you
decided that it's time for you to overcome low self esteem and start
living life on the level that you aspire to?
Here are some simple steps that you can take to easily increase self esteem:
1. Make a list of your proudest
achievements. Look back over your life and start recalling the moments
when you felt proudest of yourself and write them down.
2. Make a list of the goals that
you would like to accomplish. Write those things that you would regret
not having done when you come to the end of your life.
3. Make a list of the obstacles
that you think will stand in between you and the accomplishment of
these goals. Be realistic and objective and try to anticipate some of
the things that might hinder your progress. Understand that it won't
all be smooth sailing, but what you learn along the journey is what
will get you to your destination.
4. Describe the characteristics,
knowledge, skills abilities, personality traits that a person would
need to have in order to achieve the goals that you have listed.
5. Decide to acquire those
characteristics, knowledge, skills abilities, and personality traits by
modeling people who possess them, read books written by people who have
them, work with a mentor or coach who will support you as you develop
them within yourself.
