Overcoming Addiction, Obesity,Mental Illness and more
77Addiction, Obesity and Mental Illness
These three things are the most widespread disorders that exist and almost every other medical condition is blamed on the existence of one or more of these factors They are all considered personal choices and hereditary based. Marketing makes millions daily from offering cures. Most usually the person with any of these is considered a "problem" because they should be "doing" something about it. Society beats these people up, these people beat themselves up, we try to conceal, deny, and ban. Yet how can we ban, conceal or deny the most prevalent of issues presented to all societies equally?
Is Being Stuck Funny?
Stuck
At some point in dealing with these issues and looking for answers, the feeling of being stuck becomes prevalent. Why does it seem so difficult? We employ measures of positive thought, we go to AA Meetings, we round up our support groups, we read, we analyze, we invest in everything on the market. These things all help, but at the end of each day we still seem to be stuck, vowing tomorrow will be the day we find the cure, the answers, and overcome.
Although this video is curiously amusing, feeling stuck is nothing of the sort. Feeling stuck only aggravates the issues further. As this video does aptly depict, getting out of these positions requires much effort and usually assistance.
My story
I have learned, and employed many amazing healing benefits into my life. I was born with mitral valve prolapse, I was able to stop taking beta blockers after 20 years and the murmur can't even be found by the doctors who used to treat it. This and many other miracles have manifested into my life through holistic medicine.
Here is where I got stuck, if I can manifest these miracles into my life, what makes something as simple as stopping smoking, where I have a choice so elusive? What makes addiction, overweight, depression and a myriad of similar things appear to be insurmountable. I have explored these questions and searched diligently for answers, and employed my money and energy into alternatives and possibilities. The answer came from the mouth of babes and was so amazing I wonder still, that I couldn't see what was in plain sight.
What Does a Fact Look Like?
Fact and Fiction
One of my sisters has 3 young boys ages 2, 3, and 4. She recently decided they were ready to begin learning about fact and fiction. They are quite smart and caught on quickly. I observed the 3 year old as he expressed, "I am sad and that is a fact". The 4 year old piped in, "I am happy and that is a fact". Understanding that a fact cannot be in conflict, they began to argue to convince the other that they were right and the other was wrong. They knew they couldn't both be right if it was a fact.
Observing this, I suddenly realized the "facts" we are being told, telling ourselves and compounding upon. It is more than a label, it becomes a fact and facts are irrefutable right?
Owning Versus Being
Ownership is to have something. if we have something we also have choices affiliated with it. I have something means I can keep it, sell it, trade it, give it away, throw it away and share it. The possibilities are unlimited
Being something is a fact. I am is taught to be the most powerful statement we can use. I am is stating a fact, it is irrefutable, permanent and unchangeable. There is only one possible outcome.

Misuse and Mislabeling
I began listening to myself and others with a different ear and suddenly heard things that shocked me. A recurrent verbiage was being used by those overcoming, as well as those who were not. Everything that is considered curable had many different outcomes and everything considered incurable was having one outcome.
We have a cold, we have cancer, we have heart disease and heart disorders. These others issues are labeled differently though. Someone is(I AM) an alcoholic, is depressed, is gay, is bipolar, is addicted, is a smoker, is fat, is overweight, is bulimic etc.
I heard myself saying "I am a smoker, but I am quitting" What did I think? I am going to quit existing? I would have to become something else, my very identity was at stake here. As is everyone else who is something.
When we have something, we can change its status, when we are something we have to be magicians. A book is hardcover, can we just by thinking and saying change it to softcover? The answer is obvious, a resounding No. That is what we are trying to do when we label that something is then try to change it, magic.
Replacing I Am With I Have
Time too start replacement therapy, or what is often now referred to as re-framing. How do we do this? Where do we begin? I have just started on this new journey and I offer for you to take this journey as well. Start listening to what you say, start listening to what others say. When you hear or say something that sounds like a fact but could be an opinion (fiction), stop and change what is said.
When anyone or you say you are something, re-frame immediately to an I have statement. Example: I am a smoker. re-frame...I have been smoking, I have smoked, I have a cigarette. All of these statements can be changed, to I had, and now it can go away, just like a common cold, you can get over it and be cured. I enjoy experiencing the change in the way I feel with these reframes and look forward to unlimited possiblities.
I have recommended some articles below that share more on the subjects of self talk and re-framing that may be very useful.

I have been down that path to quitting the cigarettes,(several times). It seems
like a change of approach is what is needed, and yours is a very likely solution. Hope that people will read this informative piece, and take it to heart.
Thank you for reading and commenting, Take the journey, we can check notes back later. Best of luck, I know the challenges.

Emohealer: I had to stop reading when I clicked on your hub, as I was about to make dinner, but left your article open in my computer, so I could come back and finish it, as it really caught my interest. Wow, I just played with the reframing, from "I am" to "I have" and the "have" has a fluid feeling, that it can be changed. This is really good!
Re: KCC's comments, I totally agree that EVERYTHING is a matter of perception, we do create our life experience by what we perceive.
Thumbs up!
VioletSun, I look forward to your feedback, I appreciate you sharing your experience and description of what I have been experiencing with this new realization. Thank You!
Such amazing inspiration in this hub, like it was happening in the moment for you and will happen in the moment for others as they read it.
Smoking was one of the last things I hung onto, I got out the other end of this with not wanting to smoke by asking myself each time I smoked why I was having that cigarette and then still allowed myself to smoke it (otherwise I doubt whether you get the correct answer!) What I found over a period of time was that the real reason was that I did not know whether I could cope with me in full energy and more consciousness and I certainly didnt think anybody else would! So what I was doing was repressing my energy, suppressing levels of who I really was by smoking. When I did finally smoke the last cigarette it was quite shocking to live with the whole of me as it began to surface but I got over it!
Namaste
Awesome!!! Thank you so much Namaste, this was happening in the moment, the journey has just begun. You are sharing the happening of the outcome I have been seeking. I want more than leaving cigarettes behind, I have the ambtion to leave the desire behind.
This is how it is done, the results are happening, your sharing adds so much, I appreciate it!
I do agree with you. I find much of this is true to my yo yo weight. See I have stopped smoking but still overeat. I find this one hard to control.Interesting hub. Thank-you
This is a very positive way of looking at things. We are all on a personal journey from the cradle to the grave, but sometimes we walk the same road too often, and our paths become rutted. It's all too easy to carry on doing what we do without thought. Change takes courage, and by re-framing our actions and activities we can find those resources within ourselves.
ethel: Good for you, I know the choices involved as you stopped smoking, but like me, you are still searching for answers to change the desire. I hope that this will empower you as it has me. Thank you for your candid comments.
Amanda: I appreciate your participation and addition to what I have shared. Your comments are right on target, it does take courage and the resources are within. Thank you, continue to enjoy the journey.
EXCELLENT advice emohealer!!! This morning I was thinking about writing a hub on 'why choose dementia?' - amazing! Love your suggestion. I've grappled with this one too because to "be" a non-smoker still has the term "smoke" in it, thus the association is still there. It's much tougher to convince our subconscious genies without replacing the undesired behavior with a different picture since our subconscious works in pictures.
To lose weight for example, most people say, "I have to lose 30 pounds" - thier genie says, "right, you have to lose 30 pounds" (our genies being there to make us right). The key to that is to choose your ideal weight and create a positive affirmation that can be grown into i.e. I'm happy, healthy and gorgeous at 125 pounds.
Applying your wise suggestion, the key would be to create an affirmation of "having decided" to let go, or an affirmation with a picture of a healthy _____. To ease into it, the disassociation makes tremendous sense!
Still a tough call on some of the others. For example, my mom "is" bipolar but now "has" Picks. Of the two, I would think bipolar would be easier to "give up" than Picks.
Profound thought for relinquishing judgmental labels too! Thank you Ma'am!
Hi there,
The last time I tried to read your hub, the page froze. Glad I finally remembered to come back and try again. I like the idea of having something and not being it. Sometimes it is easy to merge the two, for expediency sake, when you are putting up a hard fight to keep hopeful, but I think there's a lot to be said for framing my thoughts differently on a more consistent basis.
Thanks for the reminder!
~Jen
Sem Pro: You're comprehension and expansion on the process almost leaves me speechless. (Very hard to do by the way). You have obviously worked quite a bit with reframing and overcoming. I blush from the compliments, so I will just humbly appreciate, Thank You! Do share as this process evolves for you and the new things begin to manifest.
Jen: Wow, how nice to have you visit this hub! Yes, stop owning MS by all means, then it can stop owning you. It is just an experience and as you have so aptly shared it is an ever evolving process. Allow your experience new opportunities with this reframing. You are such a positive, upbeat inspiration I can't imagine you any other way. I really appreciate your comments!
Hi emohealer, wonderful hub as usual and full of insight. As a hypnotherapist I spend quite a lot of time with my clients on how they talk to themselves and what they think about themselves. I think that its very important that you've highlighted the importance of how people structure their view of themselves and how they phrase it.
CMHypno: I appreciate your response, especially as this is one of your areas of expertise being a hypnotherapist.

I love this approach, and you're right, it's so very simple, yet it eludes us most of the time. I quite regularly argue with my hubby about "facts". He's very much a black and white (versus shades of gray) and has a hard time understanding why everyone doesn't see the cold hard 'facts' like he does. I'm always quick to give my opinion and that is...there are no facts, EVERYTHING is a perception to the observer.
Thanks for reminding me that I need to reshape a few thoughts surrounding 'what is' so that I can become more aligned with what I want. :)
