Social phobia happens to people of any age, some experience it in their childhood due to genetics, others in the adolescence and others in their adulthood due to some trauma. The problem is that this disorder can become part of your life for years without any recovery if you dont look for help.
Social phobia in teens is more common that you can imagine. At that age, adolescents are starting to form their personality, values, beliefs and behaviors that will remain for the rest of their life. At that age teenagers are starting to make new friends and meeting girls.
So when a teenagers has social phobia it becomes a real nightmare, they cant do the same things that their friends do and have fun even thought they want to. They are to afraid of being embarrass, of being humiliated and being judged by others in the school, at a party and anywhere else.
This is why you should find a way to overcome social phobia or social anxiety and not wait one minute more without taking a therapy, later it will become more difficult to overcome it.
Causes of social phobia in teens
There are different possible causes of social phobia in teens and is different in each case, some of those causes could be:
- Genetics, it could be inherited from a parent and the child have it as a results of genetics.
- The environment, if the place where the teen lives and interacts is negative and does not encourage to be open, give his opinion and be part of everyone else it can become a cause for social anxiety.
- Negative experiences, its common that a teenagers that is scrutinize in school or by his friends because of her body self image or anything else, then those negative remarks can trigger severe social anxiety.
- Social phobia can be caused due to a bad performance in public or embarrassment, this then creates performance anxiety or public speaking anxiety.
Those are just some of the possible causes of social phobia in teens, however the circumstance or situation can be completely different in each person and also the environment could affect a lot.
Overcoming social phobia in teens
However this disorder can be overcome by following some treatments and therapies that are available such as psychotherapy, medications, natural remedies, counseling and others.
If you follow a behavioral therapy and find a physician to prescribe you the correct medications to cope with social phobia you can overcome it.
My final recommendations is that you take action and find professional help, psychotherapy is the best option and also exposure therapy, you have to put your own effort to meet some people from time to time so you can get more comfortable and conquer your fears over time.

Have you read my hub telling the story of my son's school phobia?
He also suffered social phobia until he realised that no one was going to force him to do anything anymore and in time he chose to socialise more and more. I would now say he was a really 'sociable' teenager!
