Robby's Background

Now you can own a piece of the 1956 sci-fi classic cult film Forbidden Planet. Robby the Robot was the most expensive prop built for the movie and since his acting debut made appearances in additional movies, television shows and commercials:

  • Lost in Space (two episodes, playing a different character in each one)
  • The Invisible Boy
  • Gremlins (he was in the background of the inventor's convention)
  • Twilight Zone
  • AT & T commercial
  • 3 episodes of Wonderwoman
  • Mork & Mindy
  • Earth Girls are Easy

The 7 foot 2 inch robot certainly earned the $125,000 it took to make him and has been inducted into the Robot Hall of Fame.

Own Robby the Robot

Hammacher Sclemmer, the makers of "the best and the unexpected" has a true to life Robby the Robot for sale that was built using the original blue prints from the movie version. The reproduction stands at 7 feet tall and was made by the man who restored the original robot in 1970.

Robby can be controlled with the included remote control and says some of his more famous lines from the movie with a high-quality sound. The purchase of the robot also comes with a microphone that allows the use to project their voice through the robot and it can be hooked up to a personal home theatre system.

Hammacher Sclemmer describes some of the additional functions that Robby the Robot can perform for you:

"[He can] move his computer relay assembly, rotate his servo-controlled head, spin his planetary gyro stabilizers, and rotate his scanners while his various lights flash."

The body of the robot is made of fibreglass with brass, aluminum, and titanium accents. For additional information on Robby the Robot and to hear the special conditions that apply, call 1-800-227-3528 between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. Eastern time.
