Why Own a Rat?
Rats, despite their reputation, are very clean animals. They are also very intellegent and can even learn to respond to their own name. Rats make very good pets for older children who know how to handle small animals.
Rats need to have a wire cage that is big enough for an exersize wheel and still have enough room to move comfortably around in. Typically 12 X 24 inches of floor space is ideal.
Rats should also have a very regulated diet because if their is to high of a fat content the rat will become overweight. It is best to have a pellet diet so you can know what the rat is eating because they will just pick out the things they like in other seed diets.
Time out of the cage is very important. You need to socialize with your rat on a regular bases so they continue to be tame and calm around people. Rats are very social animals and very rarely bite.
Rats live 2 to 4 years so it very ideal for anyone looking for a companion but doesn't need all of the upkeep. If your considering a rat, they are definitely worth thinking about. Not only are they cute and cuddly, they are also very intelligent and make wonderful pets for anyone. Please follow the following link to view travel, pet, and work from home resources:
