When you want to listen to your favorite song or check out the music of a band you keep hearing everyone talking about, where do you go? More people than ever before are turning to music downloads for the answer. You can go online, do a search, and find your favorite songs in digital format so you can enjoy the songs on your computer or MP3 device. But what type of service should you use?

One possible answer, at least if you’re interested in free music downloads, is a P2P network.

What is P2P?

P2P stands for Peer to Peer. The term refers to a network of ordinary users who exchange music with one another, usually at no cost. With this type of network, you have access to a wide range of songs and albums, sometimes even music videos, and can share your own music library with others.

The Benefits of P2P

As you might imagine, one of the benefits of this type of network is greater access to a diverse selection of music downloads. Instead of being simply limited to tracks available from a certain licensing company, you can discover musical talent from unsigned acts, international artists, and more. No matter what type of music you enjoy – from jazz or classical to metal or punk – you can find plenty of choices available.

The other benefit is that since you are getting free music downloads you don’t have to worry about the limitations on your budget. You can enjoy as much music as you want whenever you want it.

The Disadvantages of P2P

Of course, there are some potential drawbacks. Free music downloads are great but if you choose to go to illegal sites you could find yourself in a great deal of trouble. Even though the music industry has stopped doing law suits against people who download music illegally, they have sued many people and won in the past. And now they can cause you to be banned from your Internet Service Provider permanently if you are suspected of uploading music files for others to download. Thankfully, some legal P2P sites do exist.

Another drawback is you may not be able to easily find whatever you want. Your options are limited by the size of the network of users connected at any one time. That means you may not be able to find what you want because no one online right then happens to have it. If they do have the files, they may be of poor quality. Going through a site that gives you the option of purchasing certain songs or of downloading some songs through them instead of through peers is a good idea. That way you have more chance to get the music downloads you want.

Bottom Line on P2P

Whether you’re a musical fanatic or a casual listener, P2P networks provide a good way to find great music. However, you want to look for such a network that is legal. If you get involved with an illegal network, even one that promises free music downloads, you could face a great deal of problems. Finding a reliable network is the best way to enjoy the music you want.
