Being creative when it comes to gardening doesn't have to be hard or expensive. You simply need to look at everyday things a bit differently. Over the years I've seen and done a few things that added to the garden that cost very little to nothing. By using items you already have, you can give your garden that extra perk that sets it apart. Using an outgrown toddler bed frame is something I've seen many times. You can simply set the frame where you want it (good for if your not sure about placement) or sink it in the ground by digging 4 holes. You can use just the head and foot boards or keep the side rails attached. Leaving the rails on limits the space you have but by just using the head and foot boards you can set them as far apart as you need. If not sure about placement you can just set the frame up and leave the flowers in their flats (make sure you water them daily if done this way as they dry out quickly).

When junk isn't Junk

A while back while cleaning out a basement I came across no less then 5 bird cages of various sizes and shapes. Rather then throw them out or set aside for a garage sale, I decided to use them around the deck as planters. Most cages come with plastic guards the enclose the bottom of the bars on all sides, which when combined with the base gives you about 6 inches to fill with soil. Plants such as Sweet Peas, Goldheart Ivy, Blushing Bride Tradescantia, Merrybells and Mediterranean Pinks are good choices depending on sun or part sun exposure. Don't use plants that have big blooms or that grow more then 2 inches taller then the cage. Trailing vines work well in cages also.

Everyday Items

There are many everyday items that can be used to hold plants.  Got an old bucket that is maybe cracked, dig a shallow spot and lay the bucket on it's side.  Add soil to look as if it's 'spilling out' and add plants at mouth of bucket.  Old tea kettle?  This makes a great indoor planter and a thoughtful gift.  I've even used an old tire that someone dumped on my lawn.  I placed a plant hanger in the middle of the tire, filled the tire in with soil and added Viola's then hung baskets of wave petunias.   Here's a tip, garage sales are great places to find items to perk up your garden for very little money.  Look for things that can stand up to outdoor weather if using outside.

There is nothing like brightly colored pansies and petunias to warm your soul on a cold December morning. Don't have room for a garden bed? Put an evergreen shrub in a pot and tuck some alyssum around the edges. Be sure to place the pot close to a walkway or by a doorway so that you can smell the sweet alyssum as you pass by. With snapdragons, dianthus and other winter annuals it is especially ...
