PITBULLS: Killer animals or not???
75You decide. Maneater or lover?
Well, here it is for the whole world to see. The violent, bloody, slobber slinging truth about the medias favorite evil animal. A giant grizzly bear you say? No? Well then it must be a maneating croc? No? Then surely it must be 30ft python? No. It's the American Pit Bull Terrier(APBT) and the American Staffordshire Terrier. Or as you know them PIT BULLS.
Let's get straight to the facts shal we? First stop and think if you have EVER heard any good news about a "Pit Bull" in the media today. Probabley not. The only time that the media outlets around our country even think about a "Pit Bull" story is when some one is injured by one of them. And yes, there have been a couple of deaths by attacks.
Now. Ask yourself one more question. If the "Pit Bull" breeds are that mean and blood thirst all of the time why did Pres. Theodore Roosevelt, Laura Ingalls Wilder and Helen Keller all own "Pit Bulls"? And remember the Little Rascals? Petey(the dog) was a "Pit Bull". I bet the directors of that show had a hard time replacing the children when Petey(the dog) ate them after every show! OK. Just trying to get a point across.
So. Let me start with this. The "Bully Breeds" started out with a fighting reputation. They were used for bull and bear baiting back in the 14th century. That is what they were trained and bred to do. It was thought that a bulls meat would be no good if it were'nt "baited". People actually would not buy the meat if they knew that it was not "baited". Eventually, the bull and bear baiting were outlawed. After a time some brainchild got the idea to let the dogs fight against each other in a PIT. Thus came the "Pit Bull". I am very sad to say that when I was younger I was taken to a Pit Fight in East Tenneessee. It had to be the saddest and most cruel thing I had ever seen.(and i have spent time at war)
The "Pit Bull" was eventually crossed with a terrier to make them quicker and more agile. They did this because they use to have contest to see which one could catch and kill the most rats in the shortest amount of time. And of course so they would be quicker in the fighting pits.Remember pit fighting is illegal!
People today (and I use the term people here losely) still fight the pit bull against one another. You have gangs, drug dealers, and idiots alike that have to have these breeds and train them to be what they are when you see them on the news.
The real "Pit Bull"
The first thing I have to say, is that I own some APBT's and some Amstaff's. We own 5 of them and they all stay in our home. I have found over the years that these are the most caring, lovable, friendly, intelligent, and emotional dogs you could ever own.(they actually own us but we wont talk about that right now) I was walking around the fle-market one weekend with my wife and our American Staffordshire Terrier CAMBER. We were inside and had her in a shopping cart pushing her around. A lady came up to her and started talking to Camber, who was about 2yrs old at the time. This lady let Camber lick her face, ears, nose, mouth....yes, I said mouth.(she must not have seen her "cleaning" herself 2min before) Antway. After this lady was done making out with our "Pit Bull" she asked us what kind of dog she was. We replide that she is an American Staffordshire Terrier. The lady then said "she is very nice. you know at first I thought she was a pit bull but she was acting to nice to the people around her." We then smiled and said "well, she is a pit bull. That is just another name for her breed. GET READY FOR THIS! The nice lady then said "OMG! and walk away!(she made out with camber and didn't even call her the next day) Camber is still heart broke!hehehe. Sorry I had to tell that story because it shows the ignorance of the common public. Ignorance set on by the media.
The biggest surprise yet! "Pit Bulls" have no NATUERAL human aggresion bred in to them!!! That is a trait LEARNED by their owners. Their are no bad "Pit Bulls". Just bad owner. A well raised and socialized dog(any dog) will lick you and love you till you can't stand it anymore. A "Bully Breed" considers itself one of your children and expects to be treated as such. If you let your kids on the couch. Then the little bully baby is going to. If you let your bully baby sleep on the bed with you just once, be prepared to move a 500lb sack of sand of your bed! And it will be back up when you awake in the morning.
My point is just this. A TRUE Bully Breed is a family dog. Yes, they are not for everybody. They be head strong and drive you nuts wanting to swing or play fetch or jump. They will also melt the coldest hearts the first time they smile at you when you come home from work.(yes. A bully can smile) They will snuggle with you when your spouse is gone or there. If there is no room, then they will make it. They will never, and repeat never let your child/their playmate get hurt if they can help it. They would gladly give their life so that someone that you love can go on. And they will do what ever it takes to please you; their one true devotion in life. I ask only this of you. The next time you see a family pit bull out with it's family. Talk to them and let them know that you know pit bulls are'nt what the media says. And for the love of God, do not make out with thier bully baby and not call the next day!! Thanks. RWG

Great hub, Dawg! I must admit that I used to be one of the "haters" of this breed. Not that I hate any animal (other than a snake) but because of fear from all the horror stories and myths that had been passed around. My daughter started raising them while we were living together and I have been a hopelessly devoted to Grammy to them ever since. One of them stays inside with us and is a big Grammy's boy!
For all those who insist on trying to say that the fighting is in there blood, I have a question that I would like for them to answer. If it is in their "blood" to fight, why are so many (including my daughter's first one that she rescued) of them tortured over and over until they die because they WON'T fight. Seems reasonable to assume that if it is in their blood, people should have no problem at all making them fight, much less have to torture them to death trying to force them to.
I am done with my rant. I have just had that question weighing on my mind for quite a while now and I appreciate the opportunity to get it out of my system. I have seen so many videos of these poor animals being tortured, beaten, electrocuted, starved and any number of other cruelties you can't even begin to imagine. I have had to stop watching them because it gets to me so badly. If people think these animals are monsters, they really need to meet Bo and Mya. Bo is the biggest wimp I have ever seen! He is afraid of everything because he is so babied! Mya is just a sweetheart and the one who won my heart for the first time. She is still Grammy's girl today! Thanks for writing this, Dawg!
Bonnie
Thanks bonnie. Copper, my APBT is a big baby too. He'll run from his own shadow but it follows him and he gets scared.LOL BAN THE PEOPLE< NOT THE BREED!!
This is a great article. All dog breeds will kill and maim if that's what they are trained to do. If they are trained to be good then they will be good dogs. Pit bulls have gotten a bad name and image among the people of the US, (possibly the world). As you stated, the media only tells about the bad things that do happen.
Keep up the good writing.
Thank you SirDent. I really appreciate the time you took to read this hub. It's nice to hear poeple who are "MEDIA" scared of these loving dogs.
I'm sorry i stopped reading and caring about what you had to say when you mentioned going to a fight. Which I'm willing to guess you didn't report. You sit here in a mock outrage and yet people like you are the problem. The ones that witness these horrible things and turn your head. So go ahead and place the blame on whatever sex, ethnicity, occupation, and status you choose to.
Pitbulls are wonderful and remarkable dogs. I'm the mommy of a rescue pit.
I own two pitbulls and their as if they were my child. I love them to death!!
Pit Bulls' jaw structure is meant to harm and kill. They were BREAD to be viloent. I have WITNESSED an attack and seen the wrath they can cause. NO this is not a friendly animal. SUre, every dog has the ability to be well tempered, but they are hormonally imbalanced. They can snap at any time, on anyone.
If you have children in your house with these animals, I strongly receommend you sell your dogs. These animals should stop being bread.
Melissa. They are in the highest class recomended by the AKC as a family pet. Do some research including what is the background of the attack. What kind of owners and care were they provided with. If you look into what the fighters do these dogs to break their spirit then insite a fight you will wee the truth. AND, in the olden days when they were used as blood sport dogs (and to this day I would assume) the oppisite "handler" has to go over the dog to make sure there is nothing on it (acit ect) that will harm their dogs. This is after they have given them seriods, or gun powder, or bee stingers or embedded bottle tops under their flesh at the place the collar is to have them in constant pain. You are much more likely to be bitten by a lab than a bullie. I don't doubt you have seen bad things but look at the circumstances and see what torture these loving animals go thru at the hands of their owners before you condem the wrong end of the leash please.
Poor, poor misinformed, fearful Melissa. Pit bulls 'jaw structures' are exactly that of any other dog. It is a MYTH that they have locking jaws. And in scientific studies, it has been proven time and again that Rottweilers and German Shepherds have a stronger bite (psi) than a Pit Bull does.
I have witnessed an attack by a medium sized Poodle, on my own son when he was 6 years old. We had to rush him to emergency because the back of his arm was ripped open. And I personally was attacked by a Dalmatian in our neighbourhood growing up. These were 'family dogs' that knew both my son and I. Do we say that Poodles and Dalmatians are not friendly and shouldn't be bred? No. We accept this behaviour and dismiss it as the dog having had a bad day or something ridiculous like that.
Pit Bulls are far from 'hormonally imbalanced'. In FACT, the American Temperament Testing Society regularly tests over 200 different breeds and rates them based on factors such as stability, shyness, aggressiveness, and friendliness, as well as the dog's instinct for protectiveness towards its handler. Sorry to tell you, Melissa, but Pit Bulls rate 85.3% ~ this is higher than Golden Retrievers 84.6%, German Shepherds 83.7%, Cocker Spaniels 81.9%, Collies 79.4% (Lassie would be so sad), Dalmatians 81.9%, and many other popular 'family breeds'. Check it out yourself: http://www.atts.org/index.html
As far as 'snapping at any time', every dog, hell ... every person has that ability. Pit Bulls were bred to NOT have any human aggression. In FACT, back in the day, if the dogs showed any human aggression, they would be killed immediately, thus ensuring a human friendly bloodline/breed. They needed to make sure they could stand in the pit within 2 feet of their own dog during a dog fight, and be able to pull their dog off another dog at any moment, without the fear of being bit. Messed up, I know. Dog fighting is sickening and horribly cruel. But this was what they did, and still do.
And about them not being around your children, well I have 2 things to say about that. First of all, if you leave your small children alone, unattended, with ANY breed of dog, you're an idiot. A small child can yank a tail, pull and ear, poke an eye, etc of ANY dog, and that's bad news all around. Secondly, Pit Bulls were referred to as the Nanny breed years back, and are notorious for being stable, loving, affectionate and extremely tolerant dogs with young and older children alike.
So before you hop up on your little soap box and rant about how 'bad' these dogs are, you should invest a little bit of time into actually researching the breed and talking to people who have owned them as pets and working dogs (such as therapy dogs, drug detection dogs, search & rescue, water safety, etc), and you'll be rather surprised to find out what an amazing, loving and loyal family dog this breed is. They are, by far, the most misunderstood breed out there.
And by the way, Pit Bulls aren't 'bread' ... or any other bakery product.
i agree debbie and jeep grrrl i have grown up around bull breeds inc pitts before they were banned here in england i am in a wheelchair and refuse to own anything other than bulll breeds i curantly own a bullmastiff cross english bull terrier bitch who looks a lot like a pitt which can cause problems with the local police but she is great with my wheelchair walks next to me with no problems lays on the sofa with me helps me sit up when ever i've been laying down sleeps on my bed loves on all my freinds kids and when ever anoth dog goes for her she was bitten yesterday by a husky she just sat there and didn't retaliate in any way so much for the misconception of bull breeds being vicious killer dogs and intrestingly enough the only dog ive come close to being bitten by was a badly trained labrador owned by a dog ignarant aquaintance from when i was at college i am now slightly nervous of these dogs which seem to be every where
