Once there was a little girl who lived in Staffordshire, England named Laura Buxton. Laura was ten years old on this day, her birthday.

On a whim, Laura Buxton decided to do something sort of like sending a message in a bottle, only with one of her birthday balloons. So, on one side of the helium balloon, she wrote PLEASE RETURN TO LAURA BUXTON, and on the other, her address. Then she set free the balloon, watching it float off into the sky. She thought she would never see the balloon again, but the balloon had made it across the country and ended its journey when it became stuck in the hedge on the property of another little girl's family in the countryside of Wilt.

The little girl was also 10 years old. She was also named Laura Buxton.

So the second girl, called "Laura #2", wrote a letter to "Laura #1" - The first Laura got the letter and was shocked. After that, the two girls arranged to meet, and when they did, they were surprised to discover more similarities:

First, they looked alike - They were the same height, had the same hair color, and were dressed in similar outfits, both wearing pink jumpers and jeans. They each had brought, unbeknownst to the other, their guinea pig with them to the meeting. Both guinea pigs were brown and each had an orange patch on their bottom. each girl had a pet rabbit - a gray one, and a 3-year-old black labrador.

This is the subject of one of the many entertaining and unusual segments broadcast on Radio Lab, a radio station that believes "your ears are a portal to another world. Where sound illuminates ideas, and the boundaries blur between science, philosophy, and human experience."
- source: http://www.wnyc.org/shows/radiolab/

Radio Lab broadcasts on over 200 stations around the country. You can also listen to these broadcasts via podcasts, or online, as I did, at Radio Lab's website.

The title of the broadcast about the two Lauras is "Stochasticity", a word describing this miraculous occurrence of events by Robert Krulwich and Jad Abumradthe, your hosts at the Radio Lab. Stochasticty is defined as "the quality of lacking any predictable order or plan". Both Lauras, now 18 years of age, met in the studio to talk about this amazing set of coincidences, and are now BFFs.

Miracle, Coincidence or Something Else?

So, what was behind this (and other) miraculous chain of events? Is it fate? Are people meant to meet? Did the wind have a purpose that day, or was it all just random chance? To find out, and to hear a lively, thoughtful and insightful discussion on this and other fascinating topics, you will have to visit the Radio Lab yourself.

Another entertaining topic is "Pop Music" - A discussion about why some songs "mercilessly stick in our heads and repeat themselves over and over". Then there's "Yellow Fluff and Other Curious Encounters", in which they discuss the art of discovery, "one of the great and noble pursuits of mankind". Complete with sound effects and music.

They discuss every topic in a free-form way that, as you listen, sparks your mind and makes you feel as if you yourself are participating in the discussion instead of just passively listening to two guys talking. And they don't talk to celebrities - Just ordinary people. About extraordinary things.

They really DO, as they say, feed your curiosity with possibilty. And as someone who dwells in possibility, my mind walks away feeling like it just enjoyed a really wonderful, nourishing meal, or something, and I realize I am smiling.

Were the two Lauras destined to meet?

  • Yes! Fate set that balloon on its path.
  • No, it was just a coincidence.

You better hurry up and write that book, cosette! Someone might read this story and get the same ideas and beat you to the pucnch (and no, I DON'T mean ME!) Funnier things have happen, just like how sometimes we'll have the same kind of movies come out at the same time, like Deep Impact and Armageddon, which really was coincidence! As always, I enjoyed your hub! I never heard of radio lab before today :( Congratulations on completing the 30/30 Hubchallenge Cosette! Now you're cool like me! *roll eyes*

Yes, extremely fascininating in a stranger-than fiction way. When you write it, it may be deemed a fantasy that is too over the top. Keep is updated. It is a wonderful story.

it is fascinating...until statisticians logically demystify it and explain it away with probablility number crunching, which unfolds in the rest of the segment. still, it is a neat story. one of WNYC's reps called me the other day and is looking into it the permissions side for me, which i thought was pretty nice. thanks for your comment!

And I know that the story of the two Lauras isnt a fantasy because I'm the boyfriend of Laura number one =]

It really is amazing though. I've seen all the letters between the girls, and even the balloon that was sent. This really was a lucky coincidence, but I don't believe it was anything more than that.

really? wow, how cool! yes it was interesting to listen to the entire broadcast, and they did indeed, through statistics, blow away the warm fuzzies and show very clearly how it was not anything mystical and magical, but still quite compelling nonetheless. thank you for your comment, i'm honored, truly!
