Why Make a Watermark?

A watermark will allow you to place your name on a picture without ruining the picture itself. This lets people know that you created the image and they are not allowed to edit your image in anyway without your permission .

This is extremely usuful if you post your images in groups or make tags for others to use.

Note: All images are clickable to see in full size

Step 1

-Create a new image File > New

-A window will appear and ask you for the size. Make sure pixels is selected, and for size we will go with 400 x 100

-Make sure your settings match the image below

-Click OK

Step 2

- Next we are going to select the Text Tool

- You will notice you have a cross for a cursor, click that cross on the white of the new image

- A new window will appear, this is where you will type, but before you type check your font and color, here are my settings:

Font = Arial Color = Black (a must for this to look right)

- Once you have your settings complete, type your name, or the name you want associated with your images

Step 3

- Merge the layers Layers > Merge > Merge Visable

Step 4

-Next we need to emboss the name Effects > Texture Effects > Emboss

After it's embossed it will look like this

Step 5

-Copy the image Edit > Copy or ctrl + c

Note: Save the embossed image as your watermark so in the future you can just use Step 5 - Step 8

Step 6

-Open an image you would like to place the watermark on File > Open > "Title"

-Once the image is open you need to paste your watermark on your image Edit > Paste As New Layer

Note: Make sure you hit new layer and not new image

Step 7

-On the right hand side make sure your watermark layer (Raster 2) is selected

- Change the layer setting to "Soft Light" (See image below)

Step 8

- From the tool bar on the left select the "Pick Tool"

-You will notice little nodes around the watermark, use those to re-size and/or rotate the watermark to fit the image the way you would like

Note: Normally I wouldn't put the watermark across an image all the way like this, I just wanted it big enough to show what it looked like. A watermark should be discrete but seen

-After the watermark is in the place you want it merge the layers together Layers > Merge > Merge Visable

Note: This is the same as Step 3

Finished

Congrats you now have a watermarked your image

Great tutorial like the pics that go along. Only trouble is not able to see much of the watermark, how can I get it to stand out more? Also, like one person commented how can I save as a watermark so I do not need to go through the steps every time? Anyways Great tutorial the only one so far that I have been able to complete all the way through without a glitch. Thanks, James

Thanks for a clear and helpful tutorial.

Cyrina, set the "layer setting" or "blend" to "hard light" to make the watermark appear on a white background.

Kayla, navigate to Image | Watermarking | Visible Wartermark to save your image as a watermark. You lose the ability to set blend options, though, so I don't suggest it.

James, set the "layer setting" or "blend" to "overlay" to enhance the appearance of the watermark, albeit only slightly. You can also experiment with other settins such as "burn" and "exclude," but they make your image somewhat intrusive.

Nice tutorial! For the person who had a question about using it on a white background...you can just change the layer setting to "hard light". Hope this helps.

Keep up the great work!
