I love salmon
As much as I love chicken, when it comes to cooking for myself, I almost always end up cooking salmon. As a student, "quick and simple" is the order of the day, so why not let it be healthy too? Besides, salmon is delicious! (Well, unless you really really hate fish for some reason.)
This is just a simple recipe I came up with.
Ingredients
(Note: Lacking any actual measurements like most recipes, because I just tend to approximate)
- Salmon fillet
- Pepper
- Chili powder
- Ground coriander
- Extra virgin olive oil / Cooking oil
- Your favourite soya sauce
Instructions
- Take the salmon fillets from your fridge and leave them out for a while, till they reach room temperature. About 5-10 minutes should do it depending on your climate.
- Meanwhile, turn your stove on medium low and heat some extra virgin olive oil (you could use normal cooking oil if you don't have any).
- Season your fillets with the pepper, chili powder and coriander. You can try experimenting with different mixtures of spices really, just don't put too much of them. You don't want the spices to overpower the salmon!
- Sprinkle some of your favourite soya sauce on the fillets. Don't drench them!
- When the pan is hot, turn up the heat a little and place your fillets skin-side up on the oil.
- Wait till the flesh becomes a nice golden-brown. This should take about 4-5 minutes. Then flip over the fillets and wait another further 4 minutes.
- Turn off the heat, and serve either with or without the skin.
Notes
- Normally, I don't eat salmon on its own. What I usually do is boil some udon to go with it. Drench the udon in soya sauce and it makes for quite a lovely meal!
- The freshness and quality of salmon you use is important. Over here in London, I tend to prefer Waitrose's over Tesco's selections.
- My favourite soya sauce also comes from Waitrose. It's called "A Dash of Japanese Soya Sauce".
- If you enjoyed this pan fried salmon recipe, but would really like something even quicker and simpler, then try microwave it!
