In Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia, pancakes are traditionally eaten on Shrove Tuesday - the day before Ash Wednesday, which is also known as Pancake Day. Historically, pancakes were made on Shrove Tuesday so that the last of the fatty and rich foods such as milk, sugar, eggs and butter would be used up before the 40 days of  fasting over Lent.

Pancake Day is a great opportunity to spend some time with your children, making, flipping and filling your pancakes together.

It would be really nice to have a pancake party all together and take part in this traditional meal.

Pancake Recipe

For a basic pancake recipe, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 100g (4oz) plain flour
  • 1 egg
  • 300ml (1/2 pint) milk
  • optional pinch salt
  • sugar and lemon juice to serve
  • oil for frying

To make the pancake batter, add the milk, egg and then the flour and blend using an electric blender or food processor. Or if a blender is not available, sift the flour and salt into a bowl. Add the egg and beat well. Then add the milk gradually and beat to make a smooth batter.  Heat a little oil in a large frying pan until hot and then pour enough batter to thinly coat the base of the pan. Cook for a couple of minutes each side.

Great hub! I love pancakes-- they're my family tradition, though we eat them all the time, not just on Shrove Tuesday.

Most pancake-making results in early disappointment, though, as the first pancake is usually soggy or burned or otherwise kind of gross. Take heart, though-- even Alton Brown can't get that pancake to cook right (I am the only person I know who does-- it's my secret superpower!) Just toss it in the dog's breakfast bowl and make your next one-- it'll be fine!
