In the Western world, we are trained to expect instant results and a magic pill for everything. So it's only natural that if we suffer from panic attacks, we will look for panic attacks medication. But is this search the correct one?

Your doctor can prescribe medication for your panic attacks. Taken correctly, this medication is likely to reduce the severity of the panic attacks that you have been suffering. However, if you read the small print that came in the instructions with your medication then this alone could be enough to generate a panic attack in itself.

Beta blockers are often prescribed but their side effects can include feeling tired or dizzy, fluid build ups in your body, wheezing or shortness of breath, lower blood pressure and a slower heart beat. Ouch! Especially when you consider that beta blockers are amongst the most benign of the group of panic attacks medication.

Benzodiazepines are another group of medications. You may have heard of them by other names such as Xanax and Valium. Again, they are considered as "relatively safe" (don't you hate that description - relative to what?). Research the side effects if you're not of a nervous disposition. Apparently if you overdose on benzodiazepines this rarely results in death. A mild panic attack might be preferable to death don't you think?

Other antidepressants are also often prescribed to help treat the symptoms of panic attacks. Again, you're more likely to have heard of them by their brand names such as Lorazepam and Diazepam. Interestingly, one of the side effects of these is anxiety. So be especially careful if your health practitioner prescribes these and go back for a second opinion if you feel that they are not helping you overcome your panic attacks.

Recently, doctors have been prescribing Buspar and similar mild tranquilizers. This can induce vivid dreams, weight gain, nausea and abnormal twitches. Also if you have a history of problems with kidney or liver disease, it will pay to let your doctor know this before they prescribe this or similar drugs.

So always read the label!
