Paper Lanterns

Paper lanterns are made of transparent rice paper that is stretched over a wooden or steel frame and houses a light source within it. The simplest lanterns take the form of a paper bag with a candle inside it, but much more complicated forms of lanterns are also available to buy. A few examples of these are metal lanterns with frames formed from metal hoops to hold the paper. Some are covered with durable paper and others are made from collapsible bamboo. Paper lanterns are often used as decoration but can also be a practical form of lighting. They can be hung from ceilings, dangled from tree branches or used as lamps to light tables and floors. It is also possible to hang several lanterns along a string or wire to illuminate a pathway. Paper lanterns can be found in a wide range of colours, shapes, styles and sizes. They often tend to be round, rectangular or cylindrical, but for festive purposes they can also be found in other shapes, for example many Chinese lanterns come in the shape of dragons or pagodas, and Halloween lanterns come in many shapes that are fitting for the season, such as pumpkins and stars. The paper from which the lantern is made can come in many bright colours, and those who feel creative can paint them at home. Japanese and Chinese lanterns are covered with intricate calligraphy, while Halloween lanterns might have scary faces painted on them. Inside, the lanterns are it with candles. More modern lanterns can be lit with light bulbs, but of course these require electrical wiring or a battery pack. Although lanterns are most famously produced in China, these forms of lighting are now no longer restricted to one country. The popularity of paper lanterns is increasing, and even table lamps, wall sconces and floor lamps can be found in the style of lanterns. They are quickly replacing traditional fabric lamps in many homes. Cheap paper lanterns can be bought in many import shops, or even through online stores. Some might require the purchaser to assemble them, but this is simple to do. They generally do not cost a lot of money, are portable and can be easily disposed of. All these factors make it a convenient solution for outdoor lighting. At any party or celebration, from a spooky Halloween party to a romantic dinner out in the garden, the desired atmosphere can be created simply through the addition of a few paper lanterns.
