Parable of Three Writers
51
This is a parable of three writers.
The first writer sat down at his keyboard, stared for a long time at an empty screen, buried his head in his hands, wailed like a child, cried "AhhK! I have writer's block!" and gave up.
The second writer decided the best way to write was to make an outline and set a writing time. At the proscribed time he sat down at his keyboard and took out his outline. He wanted to start with the best first sentence. He couldn't think of the best first sentence. He wrote and rewrote a lot of wrong first sentences. He got up from his keyboard, circled his desk many times. Sat down at his keyboard, wrote and deleted many more first sentences, Buried his head in his hands, wailed like a child, cried "AhhK! I have writer's block!" and gave up.
The third writer sat down at his keyboard and wrote tititititititit . . . tatatataata . . . wuwuwuwuwuw . . .the quick brown fox ate my agent. . . the green slimey serpent turned into my editor . . . tititititit . . . tatatatat . . . and so on . . . and so on . . . until well past his deadline. He drank several quarts of alcoholic product. Ate too much pizza, Punctuated titittitit. Buried his head in his hands, wailed like a child, cried "AhhK! I have writers block!" and passed out.

The moral of this parable is, don't give up. Sit down at your keyboard and write something, even if it isn't what you want to write about.
Writing fiction? Ask your main character a question. John, why does your mother hate your fiance? John, why do you secretly wear pink underwear?
Are you writing non fiction? Interview and imaginary expert. Interview the imaginary expert's mother.
Don't worry about first sentences. The first paragraph is usually somewhere in the middle of your draft anyway. In fact, don't worry. Don't create stress by demanding brilliance or perfection.
Just sit down and write. But! And this is a big, important BUT. Don't write gibberish. Writing is fun. Make if fun by being sober and coherent. Don't get too hung up on yourself.
As for writing great hubs. There are many good hubs about hub writing already. Check out username Lissie. She seems to have a great sense of how to use the available tools and makes a lot of good observations about what works and what doesn't.
And remember, the only real writer's block is the one that you make for yourself. Relax. Enjoy. Being creative isn't as easy as tititit, but it's a lot more rewarding.

Very sensible advice. Procrastination is my middle name unfortunately, and I can always while away my spare time writing comments on other people's hubs instead of getting down to writing a few more of my own. ah well, there's always tomorrow!
