Paranormal Investigations-Cryptids
77Paranormal Investigations-Cryptids
1995 by I love paranormal creatures, or "cryptids" if you will.
Maybe that's why I like Sanctuary on Sy Fy so much.
But unfortunately I dont get to see many of the paranormal investigations shows like MonsterQuest.
I did a Hub about some of the reported paranormal creatures in NC, but everyone, everywhere has some weird unknown creatures lurking about.
Here are some of the cool (and creepy) ones I have run across on the net.
(Not in real life...thank goodness...)
Batsquatch
Yes you read that right....Batsquatch.
Half bat...half Sasquatch.
The first thing I thought of when I first read about it were those CREEPY flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz.
They STILL creep me out!
But thankfully these things (or thing) isn't dressed like an organ grinder's monkey with wings.
It has purple-colored skin, blood-red eyes, Pterodactyl wings and a head that's like a cross between a primate and a bat.
Oh yeah...that's MUCH better!
Allegedly a hiker named Butch Whittaker took pictures of the creature while getting ready to climb Mt. St. Helens in 1994.
(No time was mentioned, but I'm guessing the pictures were taken about 4:20...ahem)
I have not been able to find any of the said pictures online.
Beast of Bray Road
Another creature you don't wanna run into in the middle of the night, deep in the woods without the latest in military hardware at your disposal is the Beast of Bray Road.
Listen to this description...bear like, or Bigfoot like, two to four feet tall on all fours and seven feet tall when standing up right, and weighing in at about four hundred to seven hundred pounds.
And even though no human to wolf transformations have been documented, it's described as a werewolf at times.
Many of the accounts of the Beast are listed in Linda Godfrey's book, Hunting the American Werewolf.
(See? Werewolf again)
Unlike Batsquatch, there was a movie made about the creature in 2005 appropriately titled The Beast of Bray Road.
Actually I've heard the movie falls into the so bad it's good category.
Bloop
To put it mildly, Bloop scares the crap outta me.
Bloop actually hasn't been seen.
Bloop is a sound.
In 1997, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration "heard" Bloop using the Equatorial Pacific Ocean autonomous hydrophone array (try saying that three times fast) that was created to detect Soviet submarines back during the Cold War.
Bloop was heard on multiple sensors over 5,000 km apart.
That would be a little over 3107 miles apart to us metrically challenged.
So...one bellow heard by microphones 3000 miles apart underwater?
Now get this, there is a claim that the sound matches the audio profile of a living creature!
Of course real mainstream scientists that have no fun at all discount this idea.
By the way, if it IS a real creature, Bloop would be several times larger than a Blue Whale, an animal that can get up to 108 feet long and weigh 190 tons.
And you wanna know the REALLY scary kicker...?.
Bloop was heard at 50° S 100° W.
In H. P. Lovecraft's "The Call of Cthulhu", R'lyeh, the sunken tomb of Cthulhu is located at S. Latitude 47°9', W. Longitude l23°43!
I bet cryptozoologists tell each other this story at night around the campfire just to freak each other out.
They probably end it by leaping up and shouting "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!" then laughing hysterically.
The Grinning Man
Just plain F-R-E-A-K-Y.....
On October 11, 1966 in Elizabeth, New Jersey on Fourth Street, two boys, James Yanchitis and Marvin Munoz saw what they called "the strangest guy we've ever seen." .
He was said to be huge "He was the biggest man I ever saw." one of the boys said, and looked at them and "then he grinned a big old grin."
I guess really big people in New Jersey grinning at you is scary....?
Well, in defense of the boys, there was a report of a tall green man chasing a resident down that same street that same night, so they took off.
"Tall green man"?
Well anyway, a few days later paranormal investigator John A. Keel (The Mothman Chronicles) came to visit the boys along with UFO lecturer James Moseley and actor Chuck McCann.
(Chuck McCann?)
The description given by the boys in the interview shed some light on why they were so freaked out.
The detailed description was the the figure was over six feet tall, dressed in a green sparkly green coverall costume that shimmered and seemed to reflect the street lights, little round beady eyes, set far apart and they could not recall seeing any hair, ears, or nose on him.
Okay...yeah...I woulda freaked too.
And there were more Grinning Man reports made in 1966 during roughly the same time as the Point Pleasant, West Virginia Mothman sightings.
In one REALLY weird sighting (I know, like the others are just run-of the-mill normal right?) on November 2, 1966, a man named Woodrow Derenberger saw a object that looked like "an old fashioned kerosene lamp chimney, flaring at both ends, narrowing down to a small neck and then enlarging in a great bulge in the center" pass him on Interstate 77, cut in front of him, slow down then stop, blocking the road.
A door slid open and a big man, all dressed in glistening green material got out, and spoke to the man telepathically, telling him that his name was "Cold". They "talked" a bit and the man said he'd see Derenberger again, got in his ship/car/whatever and left.
Of course if you have read about Mothman, you know an Indrid "Cold" figures into the tale.
Now I don't want it to sound like I take this subject lightly.
I really think creatures like this have their place in society.
Maybe creatures like Batsquatch, the Beast of Bray Road and The Grinning Man are modern day versions of the dragons, chimeras and griffins of old.
(Okay Bloop not so much, they measured that crap scientifically!)
Maybe mankind needs to think there are creatures out there in the night that we don't understand.
Maybe it keeps the mystery alive.
Maybe when we look out into the shadows at night....we need something looking back....

Really?
Wow..you should do a Hub on that one.
I haven't run across it.
I note that many of these " sightings " appear to have occurred during the 60's...If memory serves, what's left of it, there was a whole bunch of chemicals being ingested back then...things like LSD, Angel Dust, Magic Mushrooms, and other assorted pharmacal mood enhancers...methinks there may have been a bit of hallucinating going on...Interesting Hub...you are always entertaining and have a great wit that keeps me interested..Thanks, Larry
Batsquatch is by far the craziest thing I've heard about in awhile. I'll probably have my own paranoid sightings of it now....even thought I'm a couple thousand miles away from where its been sighted :0)
Great stuff as usual

We have one here called the booger of belk road. Much like your beast. I think there are some we don't know about but they can stay hidden wouldn't want them turning into a science experiment.
