This year, the sales in Paris are starting on Wednesday, January 9 and will last until February 16.  Today, despite being the coldest day of the whole winter, the shops owners have not been disappointed and people have been waiting outside in temperatures under minus 5°C to be the first ones buying the best bargains although no French person would sleep all night outside Galleries Lafayette the way English people do outside Harrods.

In Paris, the earliest opening time for the sales is at 8am and the French do not rush to buy a bargain.  In fact, the most organized French women have already been in their favourite shops, looking for their favourite items, trying them on, examining the items they want, so when the sale starts they know exactly what they are going for.  They know too that big surfaces can be rather hectic and small quieter boutiques as well as designer boutiques are the ones with the best bargains.

Paris offers a choice of over 10000 bars and restaurants, 16000 boutiques, 145 theatres and the best names in art, design and fashion.  Certainly a top place to visit.

Paris sales

Discounts usually start at 30 per cent, rising after a week or so to 50 per cent and then 70 per cent.

The best approach to do the sales in Paris is to choose your style and your budget.  Paris is very well organized and if you are a designer fan you can find most of your favourite names in a few blocks.  For example if you are looking for designer classics that you can wear season after season, the Champs Elysées is the place to start.  There you will find names like Louis Vuitton at 101, avenue des Champs-Elysées and Guerlain with its subtle, timeless perfumes and cosmetics.  The Avenue George V and rue  Montaigne are also hot places where you can find names like Jean Paul Gaultier, Bulgari, Givenchy, Balenciaga, Fendi, Baby Dior and Dior among many others.

Shopping By Paris : La Trendy

If you are a bohemian at heart and you prefer a Bobo Chic Style, you will find the best shops in Saint Germain des Prés (4th arrondissement), Boulevard Raspail is the place to start your shopping here. After lunch a walk along the Boulevard Saint Germain on the 6th arrondissement will take you to fashionable addresses such as Sonia Rykiel on number 175, or Zef for fashionable clothes for children.

For those who like to have the trendiest fashions, Faubourg-Saint-Honoré on the 1st arrondissement should be the place to start their shopping experience at number 6 on the Prada boutique. Not far from there on 244, rue de Rivoli, you will find Dolce & Gabbana. This is the area for the fashion victims. On the 9th arrondissement you will find Printemps on 64, boulevard Haussmann.

For the Avant garde and those who want to find what might be fashionable in a couple of months, the most bizarre fashions, the most eccentric clothes, the Marais in the 4th arrondissement is the place to be. The Marais district combines a whirl of creative design with the delights of the Jewish quarters which offers a magnificent preserved historic centre. Also a tour along the Abbesses on the 18th arrondissement is recommended.

For those adepts of young fashion, the area around Bastille is the place to check out for designers and cool street wear.  The neighbourhood is very picturesque, in rue Charonne and rue Keller where shop windows compete with each other in colours.  The inhabitants of the neighbourhood are also worth seeing, sporting their neo punk styles; fans of vintage, tattooing and mangas.  The perfect place to end your shopping day is in one of its happy hour bars.

Whatever your style, whatever your budget you will find plenty to see and buy in Paris.  Remember that the sales come only twice a year, January and June.

Hi Princessa, I am hiding this hub from my wife as we need all our money for the heating. I have also changed my name to Ebenezer. Nice hub well done, you are doing a great job representing the French contingent.

anjalichugh : A temptation indeed and "I can resist anything but temptation" :-)

Brian: I am afraid it doesn't matter how much you try to hide it... the sales will come to the South as well :-) Amazing how despite being the coldest day in France, shoppers were not deterred to find a bargain. But then... who can stop a woman in a shopping frenzy? LOL

Keep yourself warm. I am contributing to the home heating burning all my paper shopping bags and shoe boxes in the chimney. You know it, waste not wanted!
