While friendly and social with people, Parson Russell Terriers can be a bit reserved around other dots. Terriers make excellent watchdogs; the alertness and focus that makes the breed such wonderful hunters also make them loyal and attentive protectors. A Parson Russell Terrier is the perfect choice for a family who wants a sassy, kinetic pet who’s always up for an adventure.

A Brief History Of The Parson Russell Terrier

The Parson Russell Terrier was originally bred in England in the late 1800’s. The patriarch of the breed was a terrier named Trump owned by avid fox hunter John Russell, who eventually named the new breed after himself.

John Russell wanted to breed a terrier which could not only hunt, but also keep up with the hunting party’s team of horses. The result was the Parson Russell Terrier, a powerful hunting dog which can easily keep up with a very fast team.

Parson Russell Terriers are better suited for work than show, and owners do not enter them into dog shows. Parsons continue to be known for their superior hunting skills. The breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club under the name Jack Russell Terrier in 1998 and again under the new name Parson Russell Terrier in 2003. Owners have established many clubs and groups for other Parson Russell Terrier owners, and the breed received special notoriety in the 90’s when one was featured in the US television show “Frasier”

Upkeep Requirements For The Parson Russell Terrier

Parson Russell Terriers are the perfect dog for the family or individual with an active lifestyle. These dogs thrive on adventure and need plenty of active play and exercise to burn off their endless energy. They also need an outdoor space where they can play and run several times per day. Taking the dog for several brisk walks per day will also help keep him happy and healthy.

Parson Russell Terriers do not tolerate cold temperatures well. They should sleep indoors to avoid discomfort and potential health issues. While they do need space outdoors for daytime play, a warm place to sleep indoors is essential. This is not an ideal pet for apartment dwellers – the lack of room to exercise may lead to behavior issues later on. Parson Russell Terriers need very little grooming, often an own will only need to brush the dog’s coat once or twice per week to remove old, loose hair.

Health Concerns

A Parson Russell Terrier can live to be thirteen to fifteen years old. The breed does not have any major health conditions associated with it, although dogs may experience patellar or lens luxation.
