Keyword research is not in any stretch of the imagination an exact science... not even close.
Every keyword database you use will give you completely different search counts as to the popularity of a given keyword phrase...
Conclusion: Keyword research is very easy to screw up so you shouldn't rely on any type of skewed database.
Hint: If you want to find out what people are searching for, may I be so bold as to recommend a tried and tested source to find out the most popular products people are actually buying?
Simply go to ebay.com home page and click on the "Buy" button.
Then scroll down to the bottom of the screen on the next page and click on where you see "Popular Products"...link.
Instantly you can find the hottest products and search keyword phrases that people are buying right now on the worlds largest...
And most trafficed marketplace.
There's no guessing whether a product is a top seller or not.
You'll know from the getgo what keyword to use.
Okay back to breaking the keyword research down for you.
If you use a search engine tool (there are hundreds) and for example the return search says there are 1755 searches a month for a particular keyword...
What this sample size figure 1755 represents is a tiny chunk of data, saying that keyword was found 1755 times in that database.
Popular keyword research only provides some relatively stable data, but it becomes less accurate as the keyword popularity decreases.
So the less popular the keyword, the more likely that keyword data source will be wrong.
Remember, always use keyword data with skepticism.
It's almost always not 100% accurate.
In fact there's millions of less popular buying keywords that don't even show up in some of those massive keyword research services/databases.
So should you abandon your keyword research tools because they aren't 100% accurate? Not at all!
It just means you need to be more aware of the limitations of the data you use; especially when we're researching within niche markets.
Hint: Here are two good ways I double check my keyword assumptions before invest too much time and money in a niche market.
Cross reference with multiple keyword tools to see if they're all saying the same things.
Run an AdWords campaign for a couple of days with your keywords to see how many searches you get, and to see if they convert into sales or not.
Hint: If there are are less than 8 ads for that keyword, the impression number will be lower because your ad doesn't necessarily get shown for every search.
As far as free traffic methods go, social networking is one of the simplest and quickest to delivers results.
And it's a very powerful startegy if you know how to use it.
Oh yeah, a great way to get off your rear-end and get started for nickles and dimes...even free.
It doesn't involve blat hat tactics, cheating the system or doing anything that gets your blog/site banned.
And the traffic flow it creates often is often more than enough in terms of sustainable...lasting for months...even years.
