If you are looking to remodel your outdoor area then patio cushions are a great way add a bit of extra color and style to your outdoor setting. There are an abundance of styles, textures and colors to choose from so it is relatively easy to add that bit of extra luxury. I have seen many people opt for a normal cushion or pillow on the outdoor chair but these can look a bit unsightly and can quickly become damaged. Cushions for the patio are much more hard wearing, can be fixed to the chair and can be bought as waterproof or water repellent to withstand the elements. Leave a pillow outside and it is more likely to be destroyed and going to need to be thrown out pretty quickly. Any boring or dull looking outdoor setting can be completely transformed by the addition of a colorful patio cushion here and there. If you entertain regularly, they are a must, as it is not good form to allow your guests to sit on uncomfortable hard furniture which can leave imprints on the legs when they stand up. Do not expect any invites to their place if you allow this to happen! It is important to update you cushions regularly because when exposed to sunshine and a little rain they can quickly become tired and faded. They are not that expensive and can easily be found on online stores at great prices or in your local outdoor store.

When first looking for patio cushions you should start with making a note of the size of your chair and consider how well they fit on the chair or bench. Nothing looks worse than cushions that are too small and sit in the middle of the chair or too big and hang over the sides. If they do not fit well then you will find you are in a constant battle to position them and forever moving them. After a while this can become very annoying and you will soon be throwing your patio seat cushions in the bin and looking for new ones.

When looking online on manufacturers websites, online stores or in your local stores than you will be presented with many styles, materials and colors. When looking at colors, first think about the general color scheme of the outside of your house. If you have window frames or fencing, for example, painted in a particular color then it is worthwhile finding cushions that match the color or complements the color nicely. By going to google and putting in "complementary color charts" you will find websites that will help you find good colors that will go well with the surrounding colors. This will create a superb look that most people only achieve using the services of expensive interior designers. One useful tip is to avoid using very light colors for the patio furniture cushions. With people sitting on them, especially wearing sun tan lotions they will soon become greasy and marked. Although they can be washed using darker colors will prevent you having to wash them every time guests have been visiting.

The material from which the cushions are made is an important factor to consider. Check to make sure they can be washed easily. I often tend to just throw mine in the washing machine and they come out looking like new. I have seen some, however, that could only be dry cleaned which would could work out expensive if you need to clean them regularly. Some fabrics are pre-sprayed with a protective coating which will stop them getting marked easily and allow any spills to be simply brushed off. Also look to see if the material is waterproof. I have bought outdoor patio cushions that have been left outside for weeks on end in intense sunshine and rain and still look great after a simple wiping down with a damp cloth.

The fabrics also come in many designs. If you have a modern setting go for a modern plain design look on the cover. If you have a traditional setting then a more traditional pattern or print works well. With a french style setting, one of my favorites is a pale blue and white toile de jouy type design which looks fantastic.

Paying attention to these extra details will pay dividends in the look of your outdoor garden patio setting and will save you money by not having to replace them frequently.
