Paul Hornung Set NFL Scoring Record During 1960 Season
58Packers Single-Season Scoring Leaders
Green Bay running back Paul Hornung and wide receiver Don Hutson were among the best at their positions in NFL annals. But both Hall of Famers also contributed to the Packers' success with their legs.
They join several full-time place-kickers as the most prolific single-season scorers in franchise history. And Hornung, despite the increased offensive production in the decades since he played in the late 1950s and early 1960s, still sits atop the Green Bay charts.
Paul Hornung, 1960, 176 points_The Heisman Trophy winner from Notre Dame turned in one of the most outstanding seasons in league history, considering teams only played 12 games per season at that time. His standard remained an NFL record until 2006 when San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson registered 31 touchdowns for 186 points in 16 contests. Hornung, who led the league in scoring three straight seasons from 1959-61, led Green Bay to the NFL championship game with 15 TDs, 41 extra points and 15 field goals (in 28 attempts).
Paul Hornung, 1961, 146 points_This time Hornung equalled his extra point and field goal outputs from the season before. However, even though the league implemented a new 14-game schedule, his on-field scoring production dipped. Hornung scored 10 times, eight while rushing for 597 yards and two receiving. His efforts helped the Packers bounce back from their title game setback to Philadelphia with a convincing win over New York for the first of five NFL crowns under Vince Lombardi.
Mason Crosby, 2007, 141 points_This rookie from the University of Colorado won the team's season opener against the Eagles with a 42-yard field goal in the final seconds and didn't stop, converting 31 of 39 three-point attempts and all 48 extra points. Crosby's performance allowed him to lead the NFL in scoring, breaking Ryan Longwell's Packer mark for kickers and scoring the most for any rookie kicker since Chicago's Kevin Butler tallied 144 in 1985. Crosby booted four field goals in a game twice and drilled three on three other occasions.
Don Hutson, 1942, 138 points_The league's most dominant receiver hauled in 17 touchdown catches, a career high, connected on 33 extra points and booted one field goal (in four tries) in helping the Packers to an 8-2-1 record and second-place finish. Hutson's TDs and his 74 catches and 1,211 yards were all NFL records.
Ryan Longwell, 2000, 131 points_Longwell tied Chester Marcol's mark of 33 field goals, missing only five times while adding 32 extra points. Longwell converted 16 of 20 from beyond 40 yards. He drilled game-winning field goals against Philadelphia, San Francisco and Tampa Bay. He also made five three-pointers in a win at Arizona.
Chester Marcol, 1972, 128 points_Marcol set a Green Bay rookie mark while leading the NFL in scoring as Green Bay won the NFC Central Division title with a 10-4 mark. Marcol attempted a whopping 48 field goals while attempting six in a game twice. He finished with 29 extra points.
Chris Jacke, 1993, 128 points_Jacke was good on 31 of 37 field-goal attempts and made all 35 extra-point tries. The franchise's third all-time leading scorer with 820 points, He established career highs with his field goals, attempts and percentage (83.8).
Ryan Longwell, 1998, 128 points_Longwell connected on 29 three-pointers out of 33 attempts for his second-best season percentage of 87.9. He made 41 PATs, but suffered two of his four career misses.
Ryan Longwell, 2002, 128 points_The University of California product drilled 28 of 34 field-goal attempts and was good on all 44 extra points. He booted a game-winning field goal in overtime to beat Atlanta.
