Paul Simon's Incredible New Song

Fast Car

What a jam! Paul Simon has done it again people. No artist crosses more boundaries on a yearly basis than lil' Paulie. He is constantly drawing attention to how all music, no matter how diverse, can be one in the same.

This is an acoustic rock / gospel hymn / hip-hop song about life and death that most parents will WANT their kid to see. It's a cautionary tale about living too fast and the 'fast car' metaphor which was used masterfully by Tracy Chapman a long time ago is revisited here as well.

Wait, did he say hip-hop? I've been tricked! Calm down. No tricks.

People forget about how everyone thought Rhymin' Simon was crazy for leaving the US for four years to explore African rhythms. They told him to be careful not to turn into Cat Stevens. Then "Graceland" came out and he made everybody shut the hell up quick, didn't he? Now years later, Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes is one of your favorites, right?

Wyclef Jean of The Fugees is the main vocalist on this collaboration but when Paul Simon's verse cuts in at 1:20 seconds it instantly elevates the level of the song's credibility and somehow the song gets better after his first verse (he has two). It's a spiritual and uplifting song that I'm sure people will be doing variations on in churches real soon if not already. Honoring the dead while warning the young.

Those of you who might feel mislead by my title must understand that if this song was on a Paul Simon album you would have heard of it and there would be no point in doing a hub on it.

This is what he does between the albums you buy. Check it out!

Paul Simon has been surprising us for 50 years, since Tom & Jerry and "Hey Schoolgirl". Thanks for the video and the commentary, DJ. I think he'll surprise us for many years to come.

That looks more like a Wyclef video than a Paul Simon video.

I'm one of the hugest Paul Simon fans ever, and Graceland is on my list of top 10 albums of my life. I totally agree with you about him crossing more boundaries than anyone else. His album "Songs from the Cape Man" was stunning, and his newest album with Brian Eno at the console..well I'll just say Brian Eno is a genius, and Paul Simon is a story-telling, music-making wonder, and between the two of them that album is just amazing.
